Awards Committee Seeks Nominations

The Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in assuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2013 AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle.

AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)

Nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company (including your own) by February 1, 2013.

Make a Difference - Consider Running for AALL Office

AALL is looking for the next leaders of the Association. If you or someone you know has proven leadership experience, commitment to law librarianship, and the demonstrated ability to think strategically, please consider serving on the AALL Executive Board.

The Nominations Committee is asking members to nominate individuals for the 2013 AALL Executive Board election. The committee is looking for strong candidates for the offices of vice president/president-elect, secretary, and two Executive Board members. The election will be held in November for three-year terms beginning July 2014.

If you or someone you know is ready to serve on the AALL Executive Board, let the Nominations Committee know. The chair of this year's committee is Catherine Lemann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit Library. You can email her your nomination. The committee is accepting nominations through March 15.

Update on the State Inventories of Legal Materials

AALL's Digital Access to Legal Information Committee (DALIC) and Government Relations Office continue to update their analysis of the state legal inventories as they receive more information from state working group volunteers. DALIC Chair Hays Butler and Director of Government Relations Emily Feltren wrote an update for LLRX.com on the conclusions from the inventories and next steps, including a look at New Jersey legal materials and how the committee and state working group volunteers are using the data.

Frequently Asked Questions about Member Advocacy

The Government Relations Office has developed a new Member Advocacy FAQ to address common questions about participating in AALL's advocacy program. Law librarians possess expertise that can inform lawmakers' decisions about many important issues, but the success of AALL's advocacy program depends on the willingness of members to speak up. The new FAQ answers such questions as, "I work for the federal/state/county government. Can I advocate?" and "Do I need to register as a lobbyist to advocate?" By understanding your role as an AALL member in advocacy, you can gain the confidence needed to successfully advocate on behalf of AALL's priority issues.

AALL/Bloomberg Continuing Education Grants Program - Deadline February 7

Do you have a great idea for a program? Do you have a great speaker in mind for your program but not enough funds? Apply for an AALL/Bloomberg Continuing Education Grant.

January Webinar: Global Legal Research - International Law

Finding targeted information for complex foreign and international law research questions can be a daunting task, especially if you've had little exposure. This topic, back by popular demand, is the focus of a two-part webinar series to help you hit the ground running. (The first part, covering foreign law, was presented last month.) This month's webinar, scheduled for January 29 at 11 a.m. (CST), will cover international law, which governs relations between nation-states, international organizations, and even nations and citizens (as with human rights).

Join Lyonette Louis-Jacques, the foreign and international law librarian and lecturer in law at the University of Chicago D'Angelo Law Library, and myself as we discuss how to approach global research, sensible starting points, terminology, resource strategies, collections, and more. February Webinar - SharePoint: A Look Inside One Law Firm

SharePoint can improve work processes and streamline team-related tasks, adding value to your firm/organization. Management Institute to be Held March 7- 9

Registration is now open for the 2013 AALL Management Institute, which will be held March 7-9, 2013, at the Palomar Hotel in Chicago.

Managers today need skills that will help them manage effectively and produce results. The AALL Management Institute will provide new and aspiring managers the opportunity to build management skills, collaborate with colleagues from different types of libraries, learn in a small group setting, and develop techniques to manage with confidence. Seeking 2013 Webinar Proposals

Is your library rethinking value or delivering services in an innovative way? Are you (or do you know) an expert who can facilitate a webinar? AALL invites you to submit a webinar proposal for 2013.

We are looking for webinar content that provides new ways of thinking, innovative approaches to problems, and best practices. Topics/areas can include but are not limited to: technology (existing/emerging), electronic resource management, new competencies for law librarians, library/patron services, new applications, library leadership, work flow/efficiency, teaching techniques/instructional technology, collection development, management, library value, and personal/professional branding.

Presenters for webinars can be AALL members or nonmembers with expertise on the topics. Webinar proposals must relate directly to topics valuable to law librarians and legal information professionals in associated environments. Proposals (see guidelines) will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and you will be notified of acceptance status within 30 days of your submission.

AALL Appoints 2014 AMPC

The members of the 2014 Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) have been selected. The 2014 AMPC will be responsible for selecting the programs for the 2014 Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

Amy Hale-Janeke, head of reference services at the U.S. Court of Appeals 5th Circuit Library in New Orleans, will serve as 2014 AMPC chair. Committee members include John Adkins, Andrew Evans, Emily Florio, Jennifer Hill, LaJean Humphries, Rosemary LaSala, Kathleen Martin, and Aperna Sherman.

Submit Your Photos for the 2013 Day in the Life Photo Contest

The AALL Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest is now accepting submissions! Through February 28, AALL members are invited to take a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day.

Entries will be judged online through membership voting in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle.

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Glass Half Full? Explore Techniques for Putting Optimism to Work as a Management Tool in Difficult Times.

Law librarians have been dealing with some difficult times at work, in the profession, and on the homefront for the past several years. These economic times have prompted us to have more management discussions than ever before. This presentation by Gail Warren and Jean Holcomb helps prepare the library director/manager to deal with pessimistic focus. The program helps identify three elements of the "explanatory style" after completing a model assessment tool. Marie Erickson, longtime AALL member and Law Library of Louisiana's "reference librarian extraordinaire" for more than 20 years, retired January 15.

Marci Hoffman, associate director and international and foreign law librarian at University of California School of Law Library, Berkeley, has received the Distinguished Librarian Award from the Librarians Association of the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, her achievements have been chronicled in a column by Bob Berring, "Librarianship: The Never-Ending Story," in Slaw, Canada's online legal magazine.
