For example, members may choose to take advantage of the December webinar, Raise Your Profile and Communicate Value through LinkedIn, or the final online advocacy training of the year, 2013 Advocacy in Review: Lessons Learned and Strategies Ahead. There are also details about promoting the Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency and about the 2014 Annual Meeting scheduling.

One of the most pleasantly surprising aspects of my presidential year thus far has been receiving so many thoughtful and creative suggestions from members. Several of the items placed on November's Executive Board meeting agenda were ideas that came directly from members, including a proposed Bylaws amendment, Resolution on UELMA, and new Mindfulness in Law Librarianship Caucus. I am pleased by both the board's responsiveness and members' engagement. The Association definitely thrives on the participation and insight of its members. This reality is why it is so important for each member to vote in the 2013 Executive Board election.

Finally, this E-Newsletter has information on several opportunities for promoting the profession. Members can apply for a Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant; nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company for one of AALL's annual awards; and read articles suggested by the Leadership Development Committee about difficult conversations in the workplace.

AALL Online Election Closes December 2

I am urging all members to vote in the 2013 Executive Board election. There's still time for you to help shape the future of AALL by voting for your next vice president/president-elect, secretary, and executive board members. The elected members of the board represent you and your interests as law librarians.

We have a slate of dedicated members who have agreed to be on the ballot and, if elected, commit their time and talent to moving our profession forward.

Online voting is fast and easy, and polls are open until 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, December 2. It's important to make an educated decision, and we encourage you to learn more about the candidates before voting by reading their biographies and statements. Once you're ready to vote, log in with your email address and your unique voting PIN. If you did not receive your voting PIN, please click here to retrieve it.

If you already voted in this year's online election, thank you for your participation. If you haven't yet voted, please do so - just a few minutes of your time makes a difference for your Association.

Legal Research Competencies on AALLNET

AALL has established a task force to promote its Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency as the "gold standard" of research competency within the legal community. The goal is to provide a forum for librarians, law schools, bar examiners, law firms, and CLE providers to engage in the implementation of these research standards to produce more competent, effective, and efficient legal research, impacting both performance measures and the bottom line. A section within AALLNET was created as part of these outreach efforts. Please visit the section to familiarize yourself with the content, or contact Sally Wise, chair of the task force, for more information.

Executive Board Action

At its November 2013 meeting, the AALL Executive Board considered a number of proposals and reports. Among them were the following:

  • Approved an amendment to the bylaws for recommendation to and adoption by the membership. The proposed change is as follows: Section III. Antidiscrimination. Membership in the Association or in any of its Chapters, or participation in any activity of the Association or its Chapters, shall not be denied or abridged to any individual on account of race, color, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation, or gender identity. The amendment will be submitted to the membership by a distributed ballot, on December 16. We will be providing more information to the membership in the coming weeks.
  • Received a preliminary year-end report from the treasurer - with a projected surplus of $143,000 - prior to the annual audit
  • Received a year-end and five-year overview of membership statistics
  • Adopted a formal AALL Resolution on UELMA to aid passage at the state level
  • Approved a social media policy for AALL staff and the Executive Board and also social media policies for members who serve as the administrators for their AALL-branded entity websites
  • Approved Baltimore as the site for the 2018 Annual Meeting and Conference, subject to favorable contract negotiations and support from the local AALL Chapter
  • Approved the creation of a Mindfulness in Law Librarianship Caucus.

Final 2013 Online Advocacy Training, Year in Review on December 11 - Register today!

Join the AALL Government Relations Office staff on Wednesday, December 11, from noon-12:30 p.m. ET for the final online advocacy training of the year, 2013 Advocacy in Review: Lessons Learned and Strategies Ahead. We'll assess the progress made in the first session of the 113th Congress and then discuss what's in store next year for AALL's top policy issues, including public access to government information, balance in copyright law between rights holders and users, protection of privacy, and access to justice. AALL Spectrum Seeks Proposals for its 2014 Architecture Issue

Each year, AALL Spectrum's May issue features articles about law libraries that have been recently remodeled or renovated. Spectrum is currently seeking article proposals for the 14th Annual Architecture Series. If your library has undergone a recent renovation project and you would like to highlight that project in the May 2014 issue of Spectrum, please contact Catherine A. It's Not Too Soon to Apply for an AALL Award

The Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in ensuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2014 AALL Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)

Nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company (including your own) for awards by February 1 (please note that the AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Awards have different deadlines).

2014 Annual Meeting and Conference Scheduling Begins

Meeting and events scheduling has begun for the 2014 AALL Annual Meeting and Conference to be held in San Antonio July 12-15, 2014. Scheduling information was emailed on October 31 to AALL committee, special interest section, and caucus chairs, as well as chapter presidents, with instructions for submitting meeting requests. All scheduling forms are due to AALL by December 5.












Apply for a Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Research Grant

The Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant Program, which is designed to support "projects of value to those professions that create, disseminate, or use legal and law-related information," is now accepting applications. This substantial award is ideal for creative work in any format. Suitable topics can be found within the AALL Research Agenda. The application deadline is December 12.

Law Library Journal 's Fall 2013 Issue is Now Available

The fall 2013 (vol. 105, no. 4) issue of Law Library Journal is now available online and has been mailed to members. The issue features articles on how increased reliance on e-collections impacts the ability of academic libraries to support research, particularly through its impact on ILL; using the flipped classroom model to teach legal research to international LL.M. students; preservation methods for legal blogs; researching Indian tax law; and marketing and outreach in law libraries.




Giving Thanks and Giving to AALL

As Thanksgiving nears, it's a good time to reflect on things in our professional lives for which we're grateful. Thanks to the support of a scholarship or grant from AALL, many of us have been able to attend an AALL Annual Meeting, go to library or law school, or participate in a workshop. And even if we ourselves haven't been recipients of these monetary awards, we have all benefited from the wide participation that this funding brings to our profession.

If you haven't already done so, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to one of AALL's funds. On AALLNET you'll find a list of giving opportunities along with instructions for making your contribution by mail. The Association is grateful for the generosity of our members and the resulting benefits to our profession.

AALL2go Pick of the Month – Rising to the Leadership Challenge Outside Your Library

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month - Rising to the Leadership Challenge Outside Your Library: Being a Leader in the Larger Organization.

You don't have to be the director of your library to become a leader. Leadership experience can be gained through chairing committees, volunteering, running for an elective office, or other opportunities that happen outside your law library or law school but within your larger institution. Some things to consider: Are you personally and professionally ready to develop your leadership skills outside of your library? Do you have the time to commit to responsibilities outside of your job and your family? How do you find these opportunities and become involved? Once you decide to engage in these kinds of leadership activities, how can you succeed?

Watch two leaders in our profession, Barbara Bintliff and Marianne Maher, explain the steps needed to excel in leadership opportunities in the larger organization, share their experiences when they stepped outside of the law library, and describe both the positive and negative consequences of taking on these leadership roles. This session is available as a streaming audio and can be accessed at no charge via AALL2go.

The New York Law Institute Announces SharePoint Web Part

The New York Law Institute (NYLI), a membership law library, has released a SharePoint Web part that will enable NYLI member libraries nationwide to search their entire collection from within their intranet. Kurt Mattson, the director of library services at Lionel Sawyer and Collins in Las Vegas, recently published an article, "Why do I Need Books? Isn't Everything Online?" in the October issue of the Nevada Lawyer, published by the Nevada State Bar Association. The article was part of a themed issue on legal research and writing and when to use books versus online based upon task, logistics, economics, and personal preference.

Lisa Mecklenberg Jackson has been appointed by the Montana Supreme Court as the new director of the Montana State Law Library in Helena. She is a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Law and the University of Washington's Law Librarianship Program. She has been working as a Montana attorney for a number of years and is excited to get back to the law librarianship profession.

Marnie Warner, law library coordinator for the Massachusetts Trial Court Law Libraries, retired on June 28. The Massachusetts Trial Court Law Library system began its life in 1978 with the consolidation of 17 county law libraries formerly run by associations of attorneys. From 1978 until her retirement, Warner worked to develop a professional law library staff and build a library system, ensuring that legal resources were available to the bench, legal communities, and all residents of Massachusetts. On October 4, she received the Edgar Award from the Law Librarians of New England for making "significant and sustained contributions to the field of law librarianship over the course of her career." On October 31, Warner was the first librarian to be recognized by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly as one of its designated Top Women of Law.

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Gail Hartzell.

Ms. Hartzell had formerly served as librarian at Valparaiso University Law Library and professor emeritus at Valparaiso University Law School. She was an AALL member since 2001. She was a member of the AALL Price Index for Legal Publications Committee from 2007-09 and served on the Council of Newsletter Editors (CONE) from 2006-2009 and as CONE Co-Chair from 2007-2008. She was active in the Chicago Association of Law Libraries (CALL) and also was a longtime member of the Ohio Regional Association of Law Libraries. Last May, she received the CALL Lifetime Achievement in Law Librarianship Award. Hartzell passed away on October 21.
