AALL President Steven P. AndersonIt's a busy time of year, but AALL committee members and headquarters staff have been hard at work planning activities and events for 2014. Many see the beginning of the new year as a symbol of renewal or time for a fresh start. If this time of reflection includes a focus on your career or improvements to your library, you may wish to consider some of AALL's offerings. The January webinar promises to update you on critical developments in copyright law, a key topic for librarians. The "For the Leader in You" readings and the AALL2go Pick of the Month also will advance your professional knowledge base. The Local Advocate Lobby Day, the 2014 Day in the Life Photo Contest, and the AALL Spectrum 2014 Architecture Issue are great ways to promote your library and librarianship in general.

I am very pleased to see the launch of the new online information center dedicated to promoting the Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency. I am grateful to the Task Force for its dedication to ensuring that law librarians serve as the authorities in the legal information field.

Vote on the Proposed Bylaws Amendment

At its November 2013 Executive Board meeting, the board approved a proposed amendment to Article III of the AALL Bylaws, which is the Antidiscrimination section. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document was created to describe and explain the proposed amendment.

Online voting is fast and easy, and polls are open until 11:59 p.m. (CDT) on Friday, January 31, 2014.

Before you fill out your ballot, please be sure to review the FAQ document. Once you are ready to vote, click on the Vote Now link to access the ballot. If you do not have your voting PIN, you can retrieve it here.

AALL Announces Legal Research Competency Principles and Standards

AALL has launched an online information center dedicated to promoting the Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency within the legal profession. The information center provides access to the principles and standards, implementation and best practice ideas, and information about upcoming programs on using the standards. I encourage AALL members to learn about this effort and get involved to help promote the principles and standards. A press release was issued on December 6 to external audiences. Please contact the Promoting the AALL Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency Task Force for more information.

Introducing the AALL Knowledge Center

Whether you want to brush up on your interviewing skills, develop new course syllabi, or bolster your library's outreach program, the new AALL Knowledge Center can serve as a forum for finding the information and resources you need to succeed.

This growing collection of resources includes tools for advocacy, professional development, vendor relations, and much more. Arranged by subject area, these materials will help you generate ideas and save you time.

The Knowledge Center is only as valuable as the contributions from our members. Suggestions for content are encouraged and can be submitted to Stacy Schuble, director of membership, marketing and communications at sschuble@aall.org.

January Webinar: Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials in the Courts

Join us January 23 at 11 a.m. CST for a new webinar, Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials in the Courts: A Discussion and Analysis by Dr. Kenneth Crews. The webinar will feature analysis and discussion of recent copyright cases impacting academic libraries by noted copyright scholar, lawyer, and librarian Kenneth D. Crews, director of Columbia University's Copyright Advisory Office. After a brief overview of copyright law and fair use, Crews will discuss the recent and important rulings in the following cases: the Google book scanning project, Authors Guild Inc. et al. v. Google Inc.; the use of copyrighted materials and electronic course reserves by GSU libraries, Cambridge University Press et al. v. Patton et al.; and digitizing books for print-disabled individuals, The Authors Guild, Inc. v. Hathitrust.

The webinar is $30 for AALL members and $60 for nonmembers. Please register today! Registration will remain open until January 20.

Local Advocate Lobby Day March 27

I'm pleased to announce that on March 27, 2014, the AALL Government Relations Office (GRO) will host its second annual Local Advocate Lobby Day on Capitol Hill. Please join me, GRO staff, local chapters, and AALL members for this full-day event, where you'll exercise your influence to make a difference for law libraries.

During the morning training session, you'll become an expert on AALL's top priority issues and learn best practices for successful advocacy. Then you'll put your knowledge into practice by attending pre-scheduled meetings with your members of Congress and/or their staff to advocate for AALL's policy positions. According to a 2011 survey by the Congressional Management Foundation, 97 percent of congressional staff say that in-person visits from constituents have a significant influence on the member. As law librarians and members of AALL, you are experts who represent not only yourselves, but your profession, other librarians, and your patrons, and your voice matters.

Although the event is geared toward advocates who are local to D.C., everyone is welcome to attend. The Lobby Day is free of charge for all AALL members and chapter members. Breakfast, coffee, lunch, and an afternoon snack will be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to visit area sites, including the Library of Congress, Law Library of Congress, and Folger Shakespeare Library, during afternoon free hours. Awards Committee Seeks Nominations

The Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in ensuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2014 AALL Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)

Nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company (including your own) for awards by February 1, 2014 (please note that the AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Awards have different deadlines).

2014 Day in the Life Photo Contest Opens January 1

It's that time again - the AALL Day in the Life Photo Contest will begin accepting submissions starting January 1. The Day in the Life Contest invites AALL members to take and submit a wide range of photographs and videos of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing everything else that law librarians do in a given day.

We are pleased to announce a new category this year, Best Video, and a special category, Student Services. We are also pleased to announce an expanded time frame for taking photos and videos. Entries must be submitted between January 1 and February 28, 2014, but your photos and videos can be from any time between March 1, 2013 and February 28, 2014.

Entries will be judged online through membership voting in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the 2014 Annual Meeting in San Antonio. AALL/Bloomberg Continuing Education Grant Winners

AALL congratulates the following AALL entities on receiving an AALL/Bloomberg Continuing Education Grant:

  • Law Library Association of Maryland for the program: Road to Justice: A Symposium on Access to Justice
  • Southeastern Chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries for the program: SEAALL Institute: Bloom Where You're Planted
  • Northern California Association of Law Libraries for the program: 2014 NOCALL Institute: Navigating Rough Seas: Charting a Course for Success.

The next deadline to submit an application is February 7, 2014. The AALL/Bloomberg grants program is open to AALL chapters, special interest sections, member institutions, caucuses, and individual AALL members. The grants can assist in providing ongoing quality continuing education programming outside of the AALL Annual Meeting.

AALL Spectrum Seeks Proposals for its 2014 Architecture Issue

Each year, AALL Spectrum's May issue features articles about law libraries that have been recently remodeled or renovated. Spectrum is currently seeking article proposals for the 14th Annual Architecture Series.

If your library has undergone a recent renovation project and you would like to highlight that project in the May 2014 issue of Spectrum, please send a 50- to 100-word summary to Catherine A. Lemmer, Spectrum's editorial director, by January 5.

AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: Using Pecha Kucha to Enhance Your Presentations.

Pecha Kucha is a lively and entertaining presentation style using 20 images shown for 20 seconds each to provide a framework for almost any type of short-form public speaking. The fast-paced style keeps the audience engaged and the presenter focused, and it can be used in a wide variety of ways to share concepts, ideas, and experiences. Moreover, the format lends itself to a genuine sense of creativity and fun. Pecha Kucha events are held in more than 700 cities around the globe, and the style can easily be integrated into workplace and classroom presentations. Carol Watson is director of the law library at the University of Georgia School of Law, an active member of AALL, a past president of SEAALL, and a frequent speaker and author on the subject of institutional repositories. Wendy Moore is an acquisitions librarian at the University of Georgia School of Law and is also an active member of AALL and SEAALL. In this recorded program (free to AALL members) from the 2010 AALL Annual Meeting, Watson and Moore present an energetic and creative approach to public speaking using the unique Pecha Kucha presentation style.

Member News

Anne Ellis, senior director of librarian relations at Thomson Reuters, Legal, in Eagan, Minnesota, will retire at the end of the month after 15 successful years with the company. Her role will be assumed by Lori Hedstrom, Thomson Reuters' national manager of librarian relations. Ellis and Hedstrom have long partnered on the company's most important librarian programs.

Law Librarianship in the Digital Age, a new book edited by Ellyssa Kroski, director of information technology at the New York Law Institute, and contributed to by many other AALL members, is now available from Scarecrow Press.

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Harva Sheeler.

Ms. Sheeler was a longtime member of AALL, the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section, and the Law Librarians' Society of Washington, D.C. (LLSDC). She was the Washington office library services manager at Jones Day for 31 years and served as coordinator of the libraries for several years. As the firm opened new offices in the United States and throughout the world, Sheeler was instrumental in establishing library services in the new offices. Among her many accomplishments, she was a past president of LLSDC and received its Lifetime Award in 2011. She passed away November 16.
