AALL President Steven P. AndersonThanks to the recent "Polar Vortex," most of the country has been in a deep freeze. However, it's getting to be time to thaw out and start planning your professional development and involvement for the upcoming year!

Registration will open soon for the 2014 Annual Meeting in sunny San Antonio. Conferences are an opportunity for both formal learning and peer-to-peer networking and sharing. Online groups and social media certainly can build on the discussions you begin with colleagues at the conference, but these tools are seldom adequate substitutes for making new professional connections with like-minded peers. AALL members can take advantage of other learning opportunities too, such as the upcoming January webinar and February webinar and the AALL2go Pick of the Month.

It's also time to consider your professional involvement with the Association – award and Executive Board nomination deadlines are just around the corner. I hope everyone's new year is off to a great start, in spite of the winter chill!

Registration Opens Soon for the 2014 AALL Annual Meeting

Ready to turn your thoughts to sunnier times and warmer climes? Registration for the 107th Annual Meeting and Conference in San Antonio will open next month. Watch for a personalized email announcing the official opening, and spread the word to your nonmember colleagues: Nonmember Conference Registration packages include a complimentary one-year AALL membership. By joining us in San Antonio, they'll be joining AALL!

We'll kick things off with keynote speaker Andrew Keen, who's been called "a savvy observer of contemporary digital culture." The Annual Meeting Program Committee has put together a fantastic lineup of educational opportunities that will be unveiled next month as well. San Antonio will see the return of the wildly popular Monday Morning Recharge and will feature programming developed in collaboration with the International Legal Technology Association and the Legal Marketing Association. Stay tuned for more details about these expert-led sessions.

This year's Exhibit Hall will be buzzing with the latest tools to keep you at the top of your game. Of course, there's an entirely unique and vital experience to be found in the unexpected conversations that can only happen at our conference - those who go, know. We're setting the stage with Association events that include the Saturday Opening Reception, an attendee lunch and member appreciation event on Monday, and the Association Luncheon on Tuesday.

Make your hotel reservations now to get your choice of conference accommodations while availability is still plentiful. Watch for more details about our Annual Meeting in next month's first edition of the Annual Meeting Update. We can't wait to see you in San Antonio!

Vote on the Proposed Bylaws Amendment by January 31

At its November 2013 Executive Board meeting, the board approved a proposed amendment to Article III of the AALL Bylaws, which is the Antidiscrimination section. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document was created to describe and explain the proposed amendment.

Online voting is fast and easy, and polls are open until 11:59 p.m. (EST) on Friday, January 31. Before you fill out your ballot, please be sure to review the FAQ document. Once you are ready to vote, click on the Vote Now link to access the ballot. If you do not have your voting PIN, you can retrieve it here.

Awards Nominations Due by February 1

The Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in ensuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2014 AALL Annual Meeting in San Antonio.

AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)

Nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company (including your own) for awards by February 1, 2014 (please note that the AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Awards have different deadlines).

Make a Difference - Run for AALL Office

AALL is looking for the next leaders of the Association. If you or someone you know has proven leadership experience, commitment to law librarianship, and the demonstrated ability to think strategically, please consider serving on the AALL Executive Board.

The Nominations Committee is asking members to nominate individuals for the 2014 AALL Executive Board election. The committee is looking for strong candidates for the position of vice president/president-elect and two Executive Board members. The election will be held in November for terms beginning in July 2015.

If you or someone you know is ready to serve on the AALL Executive Board, let the Nominations Committee know. The chair of this year's committee is Joyce Manna Janto of the University of Richmond School of Law Library. You can email her your nomination. The committee is accepting nominations through March 5.

Register for AALL's January Webinar by January 20

AALL's January webinar, Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials in the Courts: A Discussion and Analysis by Dr. Kenneth Crews, will be held January 23 at 11 a.m. CT and will feature analysis and discussion of recent copyright cases and important rulings impacting academic libraries.

The webinar is $30 for AALL members and $60 for nonmembers, and site registration (one per physical location) is $150. Register today - registration will close January 20 at 4:30 p.m. CT.

February Webinar Registration Open - Librarian in the Know: Copyright for Private Law Librarians

What do you need to know about copyright to assist your law library? How do you convey copyright law dos and don'ts to your users? You can use copyright knowledge to increase your library's visibility and provide a valuable service to the firm. Please join Paula Cozzi Goedert, AALL's legal counsel and partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, on February 27 at 11 a.m. CT. We will cover issues such as rights a copyright holder can enforce, rights of licensees, derivative works and who owns them, fair use, and copyright registration requirements. Be a librarian "in the know" who provides a valuable service to your firm.

Reminder: Submit Content for the AALL Knowledge Center

Whether you want to brush up on your interviewing skills, develop new course syllabi, or bolster your library's outreach program, the new AALL Knowledge Center can serve as a forum for finding the information and resources you need to succeed.

This growing collection of resources is only as valuable as the contributions from our members. Suggestions for content include: job descriptions; best practices and tips on budgeting, cataloging, and marketing your library; and legal resources, among many others.

Your submissions and ideas for content are greatly encouraged and can be submitted to Stacy Schuble, AALL's director of membership, marketing, and communications, at sschuble@aall.org.

AALL Appoints 2015 Annual Meeting Program Committee

The members of the 2015 Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC) have been selected. The 2015 AMPC will be responsible for selecting the programs for the 2015 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.

Carol Watson, director of the law library at the University of Georgia, Athens, will serve as 2015 AMPC chair. Committee members include Darla Jackson, Elaine M. Knecht, Gayle Lynn-Nelson, Mary E. Matuszak, Jennifer S. Murray, Elizabeth Outler, Ellen Richardson, and Michelle D. Tolley.

2014 Leadership Academy Fellows Selected

January Washington E-Bulletin and Opportunities for Advocacy

The January issue of the Washington E-Bulletin is available now on AALLNET. This month's edition highlights opportunities for law librarian advocacy in the new year, including the following events:

  • Join AALL's Government Relations Office (GRO) on Wednesday, January 29 at noon ET for our first quarterly online advocacy training of 2014, The 113th Continued: What to Expect in Congress's Second Session. With the 113th Congress in its second session, there's a renewed opportunity for advocacy on issues like copyright, privacy, and agency appropriations. During this 30-minute training, the GRO staff will provide an overview of the major legislative actions, opportunities, and events to expect in 2014, highlighting where your help is needed most. This training is complimentary for AALL and chapter members. Please register online by January 27.
  • Register now for AALL's second annual Local Advocate Lobby Day on March 27 in Washington, D.C. Please join me, the GRO staff, local chapters, and AALL members for this full-day event, including lobby training and day of action. You'll become an expert on AALL's top priority issues and learn best practices for successful advocacy, then put your knowledge into practice by attending prescheduled meetings with your members of Congress and/or their staff to advocate for AALL's policy positions. Submit Your Photos and Videos for the 2014 Day in the Life Contest

The AALL Day in the Life Contest is now accepting submissions! Through February 28, AALL members are invited to take a wide range of photographs and videos of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing everything else that law librarians do in a given day. Entries must be submitted between January 1 and February 28, but your photos and videos can be from any time between March 1, 2013 and February 28, 2014.

Entries will be judged online through membership voting in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the 2014 Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Please visit the AALL Day in the Life Contest homepage for complete contest details.

Congratulations to LLAGNY on its 75th anniversary! LLAGNY marked the event with a day-long education seminar on January 14 with more than 200 members participating.

Jennifer S. Murray, public access to court services and law library administrator at

Maricopa County Superior Court Law Library, Phoenix, and Lisa Rush of Travis County Law Library will present at the 2014 Mid-Year National Association of Court Managers Conference in Savannah, Georgia. During their program, Procedural Justice for Self-Represented Litigants, they will discuss with court managers from across the nation how their local libraries can assist their courts with perceptions of procedural justice.

Memorials

AALL has been advised of the death of Richard E. Adamo.

Mr. Adamo worked for Essex Law Library in Salem, Massachusetts, and was a former AALL member. He passed away December 29, 2013.
