What would you suggest as a new title for Spectrum and why?

The following responses are available on AALLNET only. For the responses published in the May 2011 issue of AALL Spectrum, please see Member to Member.

"I would call it the AALL Spectrum. Title changes are a pain for libraries. Title changes for a library publication is a snake in the grass."

--John Perkins, reference services librarian at the Mercer University Law Library in Macon, Georgia

"AALL Spectrum should be retitled Law Library Trends. The primary reason I read Spectrum is to keep abreast of the issues and trends that affect all law libraries. Naming the publication Law Library Trends would indicate its main subject matter. A more descriptive title would attract new readers and subscribers. Librarians are experts at creating descriptive subject headings, and our publication's title should reflect this expertise."

--Laureen Alford Adams, library manager at the Dougherty County Law Library in Albany, Georgia

"Continuum comes to mind because it is a synonym of spectrum that suggests forward motion."

--Kevin Miles, librarian at Fulbright & Jaworski LLP in Dallas

"I think Spectrum should be renamed Library Times. Along with its traditional role as an institution of books and research, libraries have really changed with the times. Librarians are now called information professionals and are called on to find information on everything under the sun. We must figure out and use new technologies of the times, teach patrons how to use these technologies, and locate materials and information in a virtual world because that is the sign of the times. I think Library Times can represent stories about the library as it is today, or throughout times past, present, and future."

--Susan Wong Caulder, branch librarian at the U.S. District Court Library in San Francisco

"I would suggest Law Libraries Counsel because believe Spectrum is focused on delivering advice and guidance to law librarians."

--Phil Brown, strategic advisor at Intelligize in Centreville, Virginia
