Volunteer for an AALL Committee
Become an active member of our Association by volunteering for an AALL committee. Our committees help to implement AALL's Strategic Directions, and July 2013 is the start of our new 2013-2016 plan. The new plan's directions include authority, advocacy, and education. The committees focus on either policy issues or process functions. After you have explored the different committees, please fill out the volunteer form. The deadline for volunteering is Thursday, February 28th.
Submit Your Photos for the 2013 Day in the Life Photo Contest
The AALL Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest is accepting submissions through February 28th. AALL members are invited to take and submit a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day. Entries will be judged online through membership voting in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the AALL Annual Meeting in Seattle. As in past years, the contest is being conducted on Flickr, so you can see submissions as they are posted by other members. Visit the site for complete contest rules.
AALL Local Chapter Lobby Day
Join AALL's Government Relations Office staff and chapter members for a full-day Lobby Day event on Capitol Hill. Chapter members are invited to attend a morning training session where you'll learn best practices for successful meetings with your members of Congress. In the afternoon, you will attend pre-scheduled meetings with your members of Congress or staff to advocate for AALL's policy positions. Don't miss out on this chance to make a difference!
There is no registration fee for chapter members. Breakfast, coffee, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to visit area sites including the Library of Congress, Law Library of Congress, and Folger Shakespeare Library during afternoon free hours.
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Elizabeth Holland by April 1st.
Government Relations Virtual Training
The Government Relations virtual training was held on Wednesday, January 30th. Director of Government Relations Emily Feltren and Public Policy Associate Elizabeth Holland covered topics such as how Chapters can gear up for upcoming advocacy on issues such as UELMA and funding for public law libraries, recent advocacy efforts of other Chapters, best practices in government relations, and the resources that the GRO can offer at the Chapter level. There were 25 Chapters in attendance. The recording and the training materials for the session are available on AALLNET.
The Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA) continues to make progress across the nation with support from the AALL Government Relations Office, Chapters, and members. Eight states have now introduced the bill, including most recently the legislatures of Illinois and Oregon. Last week in Minnesota, the House of Representatives voted to pass the bill, which now awaits consideration by the Senate. Earlier this month, Connecticut's Joint Committee on Judiciary received testimony in support of UELMA from AALL Immediate Past President Darcy Kirk, SNELLA Past President Nancy Marcove, State Librarian Ken Wiggin, Yale Law School Library Director Blair Kauffman, Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association Law Librarians Section Jonathan C. Stock, the Secretary of the State, and the Connecticut Business and Industry Association.
To trace the progress of the Act across state legislatures, take a look at the 2013 UELMA Bill Tracking Chart on AALLNET.
AALL Chapter List Exchange Outreach
All of the Chapter Presidents should have received an e-mail from Director of Membership Marketing and Communications Stacy Schuble requesting participation in a member list exchange with AALL. This initiative is a good way for AALL to develop stronger ties with the Chapters, while also potentially increasing membership at both the AALL and Chapter levels. Please take the time to consider this request with your respective Boards and contact Stacy if you have any questions or concerns.
