Welcome to our November E-Newsletter. This month's issue contains a host of ways for you to get involved, by voting in the Executive Board election, completing our membership survey, or volunteering for a committee. It also provides an opportunity for you to review the 2008 Annual Meeting schedule and avoid conflicts by making any necessary changes to events you are planning. The E-newsletter has the latest on AALL's national advocacy efforts, as well as salary survey information that you can use to advocate for yourself. Also be sure to read about the next step in the Library of Congress, review of the future of bibliographic control and about the selection of one of our members to be an international copyright advocate.

Tell Us What You Think of AALL
Yesterday AALL e-mailed you a link to a comprehensive member survey. This is the first member survey conducted in more than five years. Thank you to everyone who already completed or started the survey. If you experienced a delay when filling out the survey, it was due to increased traffic on the system. Your response is important to us, so please try again; the system will allow you to pick up where you left off in the survey.
The goal of the survey is to get members' candid opinions about AALL and its programs and services. It should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete, and your responses will be kept confidential. As a thank you for your help, your name will be entered in a drawing for a $100 American Express gift card, if you complete your survey by November 30.

There's Still Time to Vote in the 2007 AALL Online Elections
The 2007 AALL Online Election for vice president, secretary, and Executive Board members is currently in progress. Polls will close at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time, on Saturday, December 1. Voting online is fast and easy, and you can learn about the candidates from their biographies and statements that are linked from the election page. So please take a few seconds to connect to our secure online ballot and vote for these important offices. Elections are an important way of supporting the work of AALL, so make your voice heard by voting today!
Annual Meeting Scheduling Now Available for Viewing Online
All AALL Annual Meeting and Conference meetings, programs, and functions that were submitted to AALL Headquarters on Preliminary Scheduling forms (due November 1) will be available for viewing on AALLNET beginning November 26. Take this opportunity to ensure that your event is listed and review the schedule for any potential conflicts for your attendees. If your event has an Executive Board member or AALL staff liaison, be sure to coordinate with their schedules as well.
To ensure listing in the Annual Meeting Preliminary Program, send any schedule changes by no later than December 1 to Pam Reisinger, director of meetings (fax: 312/431-1097).
Last Chance to Volunteer for an AALL Committee
The deadline is quickly approaching to volunteer for a 2008-2009 AALL committee. Committees carry out AALL's Strategic Directions of leadership, education, and advocacy, which in turn drives our professional future. AALL Testimony before Congressional Committee
On October 24, I testified before the House Committee on House Administration about current issues in management of the Library of Congress. I spoke in support of the Law Library of Congress and its mission to provide timely access to legal information. I also joined witnesses from the ABA Standing Committee on the Law Library of Congress in recommending a new funding authority to improve the fiscal situation at the law library. Mary Alice Baish Named Acting Washington Affairs Representative
Mary Alice Baish, AALL associate Washington affairs representative, has been named acting Washington affairs representative. As acting representative, Mary Alice will be responsible for directing AALL's advocacy efforts and for the management of the Washington Affairs Office.
Also new to the AALL Washington Affairs staff, effective November 12, is Emily Feldman, who will serve as advocacy communications assistant. Emily most recently served as the program associate for OpenTheGovernment.org, a broad-based coalition of organizations, including AALL, that are committed to making government more open to achieve accountability, security, and safety. Emily received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Women�s Studies from the University of Rochester in May 2005.
AALL Salary Survey Results Available
The AALL 2007 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics is now available for free in the members-only section of AALLNET.
This brand-new edition is the only source for up-to-date information about salaries for law librarians and other law library employees who work in academic libraries; private firms and corporate libraries; and state, court, and county law libraries. The survey was carried out this July through September in complete confidentiality by Association Research, Inc., a professional research firm in Rockville, Maryland, that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations.
Printed copies of the survey are available for purchase and shipment by the end of November; $110 for AALL members and $175 for nonmembers. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2007 survey. The response rate was 65.4 percent, our highest in 10 years and nearly double the 2005 rate!
The Future of Bibliographic Control
This week the Library of Congress, Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control presented its draft final report to the management and staff of the Library of Congress. The presentation was made live to the public via a Webcast.
Beginning around November 30, the public will have a period of time to comment on the draft before the report and its recommendations are finalized. If you have any questions, please contact Richard Amelung, AALL's representative to the working group (314/977-2743).
Jonathan Franklin Selected as an International Copyright Advocate
Jonathan Franklin, associate law librarian at the University of Washington's Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library, has been selected as an international copyright advocate for a new pilot project funded by the American Library Association Washington Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP). This new opportunity was created to build expertise and broaden the capabilities of the Library Copyright Alliance.
OITP will train the new international copyright advocates to represent the library community on issues related to copyright at forums such as the World Intellectual Property Organization, the World Summit on the Information Society, and the International Federation of Library Associations. We thank the OITP for creating and funding this important new program that will benefit libraries all over the world. Congratulations, Jonathan!

New PACER Pilot Project
On April 1, 2006, the AALL Executive Board endorsed a "Resolution on No-Fee FDLP Access to PACER." The resolution was endorsed by the American Library Association in June 2006. It requested that the Government Printing Office work with the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts to allow users of federal depository libraries to have free access to PACER.
The Judicial Conference of the United States met in September and approved the establishment of a joint pilot project with GPO that will involve approximately 15 federal depository libraries. AALL Government Relations Committee member Larry Meyer deserves special recognition for his tireless advocacy for many years to bring PACER into the Federal Depository Library Program.
Robert C. Tapella Sworn in as New Public Printer
Immediate Past President Sally Holterhoff was invited to testify before the Senate Rules and Administration Committee at the September 12 hearing on the nomination of Robert C. Tapella to become the new U.S. public printer. Her statement was endorsed by the American Library Association, Medical Library Association, and Special Libraries Association.
Unfortunately, the hearing was postponed at the 11th hour, although Sally and AALL Associate Washington Affairs Representative Mary Alice Baish were able to meet with Tapella and Acting Superintendent of Documents Richard G. Davis for a substantive discussion. Tapella's nomination was confirmed without public hearing by the full Senate on October 4, and the swearing in ceremony was held on November 6.
