Welcome to the April AALL newsletter. I have taken this opportunity to explain recent cost-saving measures reluctantly taken by the Executive Board. I hope you will join me in congratulating the winners of the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award and the Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award, our highest honors. There is also news about the Annual Meeting, work of our committees, and upcoming educational opportunities. I encourage you to take advantage of all the benefits AALL offers its members.

AALL Implements Cost-Saving Measures
As a result of recent discussions on AALL online discussion lists and among the membership, I wanted to more clearly communicate the Executive Board's recent decisions regarding AALL representative funding and other cost-saving measures.
It is true the Executive Board has put in place a freeze for expenses related to the representatives program for the remainder of this fiscal year, which ends on September 30. This decision was not taken lightly, or without a lot of thoughtful consideration.
As you know, recent economic conditions have impacted all sectors of our economy. AALL is no exception. We ended the 2008-2009 fiscal year with a deficit of $98,887. This was a result of reduced Annual Meeting attendance, dues receipts, investment income, and exhibit booth sales. All of these reductions in revenue are direct results of the current economy.
In order to address the budget situation, a number of actions were taken in addition to the freeze on representative expenses. First, last June, we moved the Headquarters office to less expensive space. We also reduced the staff by one full-time position and were unable to grant any annual wage increases. We increased the co-pay amount on staff insurance programs. We have also frozen all staff travel with a few exceptions related to the Annual Meeting and critical AALL business.
We have also reduced the Executive Board expenses by changing the meeting schedule and asking board members to put in longer days to cut costs.
In addition, we asked our AALL representatives to suspend any travel or other expenses for the remainder of the fiscal year. This was asked of all of our representatives.
We are optimistic things are improving and we might have a better financial situation in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Budget planning has just started, and we will keep you informed as that progresses.
Certainly, the Executive Board is in agreement that AALL representatives play valuable roles in supporting the work of AALL and of the law librarian profession. However, sometimes the board is faced with difficult decisions, and our most important role is as faithful stewards of this Association.
Olson and Whited Recognized for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession
The AALL Awards Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award and the Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award. The awards will be presented at the AALL Annual Meeting Closing Banquet in Denver on July 13.
Marie E. Whited, catalog liaison at the Law Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., is the 2010 recipient of the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award.
Kent C. Olson, director of reference, research, and instruction at the University of Virginia Law Library in Charlottesville, will receive the Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award for his book, Principles of Legal Research, the long-awaited successor to How to Find the Law, 9th edition.
New AALL Lapel Pins Recognize 20 and 40 Years of Membership
To recognize and thank members for their long-term commitment to the Association, AALL Headquarters recently mailed lapel pins to those who have been members for 20 or more years and those who have been members for 40 or more years. This new initiative came from last year's Member Recognition Special Committee.
If you have been a member for 20 or more years or 40 or more years and did not receive a lapel pin, please contact AALL Membership Services Coordinator Hannah Phelps (312/205-8022). Many thanks again to the more than 1,300 members who have supported AALL for so long with their continuous membership. Your commitment is what makes AALL a strong voice for the profession.
AALLNET Construction Update
I'm happy to report that progress continues on the AALLNET redesign project. In the past month, the AALLNET Strategic Planning Committee approved the design for the secondary and tertiary pages of the new site, and you can see a screen shot of a sample secondary page below.
In addition, the AALL Headquarters staff received training on the new content management system and has begun content migration of the current site to the new site. The staff also worked to create the initial taxonomy for the new AALLNET, which will allow webmasters to tag content with keywords to optimize the search capabilities of the new site.
Next up, the social networking software provided by Higher Logic will be integrated into the new site. This software will provide members and entities with the ability to create blogs and wikis, share calendars and documents within a group, post events, and create learning opportunities and forums, among other benefits.
During phase two, which is slated for this fall, work will begin on the migration of special interest section and other AALL entity content. All AALL entities will soon receive more information about this second phase and how it will affect their websites. Stay tuned for more information to come.

Renew Your AALL Membership by May 1 for a Chance to Win a Free 2010 AALL Annual Meeting Registration
In March, AALL dues invoices for 2010-2011 mailed out to all library directors for their institutionally paid memberships and to all other individual members. The deadline for membership renewal is May 31.
This year, when you renew early—by May 1—you will be entered in a drawing for a free 2010 AALL Annual Meeting and Conference registration. If you renew on time—by May 31—you'll be entered in a drawing for a free AALL webinar of your choice in 2010-2011. Following is the 2010 membership renewal schedule:
March 10: First dues invoices mailed out.
May: Second dues invoices mailed out.
June: Final dues invoices mailed out.
July: Expiration notices e-mailed to all members—individuals and those paid by institutions.
August 1: Expired members deleted from the AALL membership database and access to the AALLNET Members Only Section and Law Library Journal and AALL Spectrum subscriptions discontinued.

AALL Dues Help for Unemployed Members
To help in these tough times, AALL is offering a discounted membership rate for AALL members who are recently unemployed. The discounted membership appears online and in all public records simply as an "Active" membership but is billed at the student/retired rate ($56 instead of $222). The discounted rate is good through May 31, 2011.

Newer Members, Start off the AALL Annual Meeting with 100 New Friends
The Conference of Newer Law Librarians (CONELL) is held every year in conjunction with the Annual Meeting, and participants can expect learning, good food, fun times, and new friendships—some lasting a lifetime. The purpose of CONELL is to welcome the newer members of the profession to the organization, introduce them to the Association and its leaders, and provide a setting for newer members to become acquainted with each other. This year CONELL will take place on Saturday, July 10. Go online to register and to get more information.

Annual Meeting Review Special Committee
Last month, members of the Annual Meeting Review Special Committee (AMRSC) met in Chicago to examine the findings of the recent Annual Meeting membership survey and follow-up online discussion questions. Past Annual Meeting data was reviewed along with the committee's comparative research on other similar associations. As a result of the meeting, AMRSC is working on recommendations for the Executive Board to consider at its July meeting in Denver. The committee is committed to drafting recommendations to ensure the Annual Meeting continues to meet the needs of AALL members. The willingness of so many AALL members to provide valuable feedback was impressive and the entire committee thanks you for the input.

The AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grant can assist you in providing ongoing quality continuing education programming outside of the AALL Annual Meeting. All AALL chapters, special interest sections, member institutions, caucuses, and individual AALL members are encouraged to apply. Apply by May 6.
In August, Barbara A. Bintliff will become the Joseph C. Hutcheson professor in law and next director of the University of Texas Tarlton Law Library in Austin. Bintliff is currently Nicholas Rosenbaum professor of law and director at the University of Colorado William A. Wise Law Library in Boulder.

AALL has been advised of the deaths of Cheryl Anne Jacobson Blare, Edwin C. Butler, and Arlette Soderberg.
Ms. Blare was a California native and earned her MLIS from the University of California Berkeley in 1989. She was immediately hired by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Library in 1990 where she worked for the next 19 years as the branch librarian for the San Francisco Circuit branch. She loved nature, and during her last years as she dealt with lupus, Ms. Blare cultivated her interests in gardening and bird watching. She also found sanctuary and serenity at the Pacific Ocean and in brief nature outings with family and friends. She demonstrated an irrepressibly positive outlook in the face of a very difficult illness and is loved and missed by her family, friends, and co-workers. Ms. Blare died on March 12.
Mr. Butler joined the staff of the Law Library for San Bernardino County in 1990 after working as a journalist. He held a number of positions with the library, eventually becoming branch manager. Mr. Butler earned his JD and admission to the California State Bar while working full-time at the library and used his journalistic talents to write for the newsletter of the Southern California Association of Law Libraries and the Council of California County Law Libraries. He was also a member of AALL's Government Documents and State, Court, and County Special Interest Sections. Ed's skills, dedication, and strong sense of right and wrong will be missed.
Ms. Soderberg enjoyed a long and distinguished career as law librarian at the University of Minnesota. She served as head of public services and was a tremendous resource for hundreds of law students and faculty. Ms. Soderberg co-authored with Barbara Golden the ground-breaking Minnesota Legal Research Guide, the first scholarly bibliography produced for the Minnesota legal community. She died on March 22.
