Happy Thanksgiving to all! Traditionally, this is the time of year to give thanks. I would like to give thanks to all of the AALL volunteers who keep our Association thriving and humming! We could not do it without you. And speaking of volunteering, some of our members have volunteered to run for the AALL Executive Board. Please honor their commitment by voting and participating in the very important process to select the leadership of our Association.
This e-newsletter highlights many opportunities for you to benefit from your AALL membership. We held the Futures Summit on November 3-4 in Oak Brook, Illinois. The enthusiasm and energy in the room were contagious. The planning committee, under the leadership of David Mao (new law librarian of Congress —congratulations, David!), will carry that very important work forward. We will share our plans with you throughout the upcoming year.
The Government Relations Office (GRO) has been busy maintaining our presence in Washington, D.C. Thanks to all of you who respond to their action alerts. The new one-pagers (authored by GRO and AALL's Government Relations Committee) will help you maintain your knowledge of the important public policy issues we support.

AALL Hosts Futures Summit
AALL hosted a successful Futures Summit on November 3-4. Video of the keynote remarks is available on AALLNET (requires login). The summit planning committee will meet soon to discuss how to turn the summit outcomes into action items for AALL.
Fall Executive Board Meeting Highlights
Following AALL's Futures Summit, the AALL Executive Board met on November 4-5. The agenda and board book for the meeting are on AALLNET.
As part of the board meeting agenda, TAB 1, Velvet Chainsaw Consulting (VCC) presented its report (page eight of the board book) to the Executive Board. VCC has been conducting a review of the AALL Annual Meeting, specifically a comprehensive review of the education programs. A committee of the board will soon be appointed to review the recommendations contained in the report, as well as to develop an implementation plan.
The board also approved two new caucuses during its meeting: the Consumer Advocacy Caucus and Environmental Libraries Caucus. The purpose statements for the two caucuses are:
The Consumer Advocacy Caucus will recommend to the AALL Executive Board that it petition appropriate government bodies for specific remedies to anti-competitive and unfair business practices by legal information sellers.
The Environmental Libraries Caucus will promote environmentally friendly libraries by collecting sustainable policies and ideas and periodically disseminating the best ones to the interested membership.
IFLP Now Available on HeinOnline
HeinOnline is now publishing AALL's Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals ( IFLP). The new electronic version of the index offers an easy-to-use platform and includes:
- Nearly 300,000 index records consisting of more than 265,000 articles and 31,000 book reviews across more than 500 periodicals
- Indexing from 1985 forward, fully searchable by various access points or by keyword
- Links to the full text of more than 34,000 articles and book reviews in more than 100 periodicals that are available in HeinOnline
- Unlimited concurrent usage, meaning your entire organization can access it at the same time
- ISSN and ISBN linking to your local library catalog or WorldCat
- Ability to quickly view all articles indexed by a specific author
- Ability to save/bookmark index records to a MyHein personal research account
- Access to the digitized version of the entire print index dating back to 1960
AALL member Marci Hoffman, associate director and international and foreign law librarian at Berkeley Law Library, University of California School of Law, serves as the general editor of the index. The index is the preeminent multilingual index to articles and book reviews appearing in more than 500 legal journals published worldwide.

Connect with AALL Members Like You on My Communities
AALL My Communities, available on AALLNET, provides you with a platform to network and communicate with other AALL members. Within AALL My Communities, you have the opportunity to create a social networking profile similar to Facebook or LinkedIn. By default, your address information is synced with the membership database and is automatically populated for you. In addition, you have the opportunity to provide more demographics to your profile, such as your interests, honors, and awards. The more information you provide, the more networks the community site will automatically relate to you, thus allowing you to easily connect with other members based on your interests, location, etc.
For example, if you select "library management" as one of your interests, you are automatically connected to all of the other members also interested in library management. Also, if a member performs an advanced search looking for someone interested in or who has experience in library management, you would show up in the search results.

Learn How RDA Will Affect Your Job
Resource Description and Access (RDA) is coming, whether you like it or not. Join RDA experts John Hostage, from Harvard Law School Library, and Richard Amelung, from Saint Louis University Omer Poos Law Library, for a FREE AALL webinar , RDA and Law Libraries, December 14, 11 a.m. CST , during which they will give an overview of RDA. They will discuss how the new code will assist in finding resources and its impact on staff and other library functions.

AALL Price Index Seeks Editor
AALL is seeking an editor for our annual Price Index for Legal Publications. The editor will work with the Price Index for Legal Publications Committee to produce the annual index.
We publish the price index as a service to our members, as it measures the year-to-year changes in average prices for specific legal information products. The editor will work as a paid, part-time independent contractor. If you are interested in this position, applications are due by December 5. If you have questions, contact AALL Executive Director Kate Hagan.
Volunteer for the PACER: Access and Education Program
Working in collaboration with the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, AALL is promoting a new program to expand the public's use of the PACER: Access and Education Program. PACER, which requires librarians to develop training materials for individual or group instruction, was initially tested by the Law Library for San Bernardino County and the Law Library of Congress. The program is now open to federal depository libraries, public libraries, and public law libraries, with preference given to those who participated in the 2007-2008 pilot project. Participating libraries are exempt from the first $50 of quarterly usage charges. AALL's Government Relations Office and Government Relations Committee Develop One-pagers
AALL's Government Relations Office (GRO) and Government Relations Committee are working together to develop one-pagers on our public policy priorities. These one-pagers provide background information and key talking points to influence members of Congress and other stakeholders. The new one-pagers explain AALL's support for funding for the Government Printing Office, FDsys, the Federal Depository Library Program, and the Faster FOIA Act. The GRO used the most recent one-pager on Network Neutrality as part of AALL's action campaign to oppose a resolution ( S.J. Res 6) that would strip the Federal Communications Commission of the authority to enforce net neutrality.
Thank You for Responding to the Membership Survey
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our membership survey last month. We had 1,778 respondents for a 42 percent response rate. You can browse the survey results online. This month AALL leadership and Headquarters staff is taking a close look at the responses and will provide an executive summary for the membership. This important feedback will provide a framework for future Association plans and services.

AALL2go Pick of the Month
AALL's Continuing Professional Education Committee presents the AALL2go pick of the month: What Do YOU Want? The Hidden Problem of Compassion Fatigue.
As librarianship is a service profession, the issue of compassion fatigue is a very common problem. Compassion fatigue is not the same as "burnout." Even while you are still motivated and committed to your job and your mission of service, and even while you like your job, you can be traumatized by your work if you don't give time and attention to caring for yourself and your emotional well-being. Emotional exhaustion can be traumatizing, and it can be caused by the entire spectrum of law library work—from the high stress and demanding atmosphere of the law firm to the often difficult nature of serving pro se patrons in a public law library. The effects of compassion fatigue can be as severe as post-traumatic stress disorder, but there are ways to address the symptoms and avoid the problem.
Dr. Charles R. Figley is one of the leading experts in compassion fatigue and traumatology. In this recorded program from the 2006 AALL Annual Meeting, he presents a careful overview of the nature of compassion fatigue and offers the main strategies and tips for reducing the problem and its effects.

AALL/BNA Continuing Education Grant Award
Vanessa Uribe, library director of El Dorado County Law Library, was awarded an AALL/BNA continuing education grant for a webinar program titled, "Developing and Using Stories to Teach Legal Research," which will be presented February 22 for AALL members.
Do you have an idea for a continuing education program that could be presented for AALL members? The grants program helps fund program content (speakers, venue, etc.) or methods of wider distribution (podcasts, webinars, etc.). The next deadline for applications is February 23. Get your ideas ready!
AALL/Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant Program Seeks Applications
The AALL Research and Publications Committee is accepting applications for research grants from the AALL/Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Grant Program that may total up to $5,000.
The committee will award one or more grants to library professionals who wish to conduct research that supports the research/scholarly agenda of the profession of librarianship. The grants program funds small or large research projects that create, disseminate, or otherwise use legal and law-related information as their focus. Projects may range from historical (indexes, legislative histories, bibliographies, biographies, or directories) to theoretical (trends in cataloging, publishing, or new service models in libraries) to practical (implementation models for collection, personnel, or infrastructure management).
The AALL Research Agenda offers suggestions for possible research projects that cover a wide segment of professional interest, including the profession of law librarianship, law library patrons, law library services, legal research and bibliography, legal information resources, and law library facilities. However, projects are not limited to those described in the agenda, and the committee will consider all applications and research projects.
The submission deadline for applications is December 12. Grants will be announced and awarded in January 2012. For more information about the grants, please contact Sara Sampson, chair of the AALL Research and Publications Committee.

AALL Spectrum is looking for authors for the annual May architecture issue. Law Library Journal Issues Volume 103, Number 4
The Fall 2011 issue of Law Library Journal (Volume 103, Number 4) has been published and is available on AALLNET. In addition to the Business Proceedings from the 2011 Annual Meeting, the issue includes articles about a proposed collaborative digital collection plan for academic law libraries; the citation advantage enjoyed by open access legal scholarship; the results of a survey on the use of non-MARC metadata by law libraries; and two articles related to legal research instruction—one about the use of a practitioner's council to connect instruction with current legal research practice and the other detailing AALL's work on Law Student Information Literacy Standards.
It's Not Too Soon to Apply for an AALL Award
The Awards Committee annually recognizes the accomplishments of AALL members and others who excel in assuring access to legal information and who have shown their commitment and dedication to the law library profession. Recipients of all awards will be recognized at the 2012 AALL Annual Meeting in Boston.
AALL will consider candidates for a number of awards, including the following. (Those decided by the Awards Committee are indicated by an asterisk.)
Nominate a deserving colleague, library, or company (including your own) by February 1.
Giving Thanks and Giving to AALL
As we celebrate Thanksgiving next week, it's a good time to reflect on things in our professional lives for which we're grateful. Thanks to the support of a scholarship or grant from AALL, many of us have been able to attend an AALL Annual Meeting, go to library or law school, or participate in a workshop. And even if we ourselves haven't been recipients of these monetary awards, we have all benefited from the wide participation that this funding brings to our profession.

Headquarters Closed for Holidays
AALL Headquarters and Government Relations Office will be closed for Thanksgiving, November 24-25, and during the holiday season from December 23 to January 1. The offices will reopen on Monday, January 2.
Vicenç Feliú will join Villanova University School of Law as law library director and associate professor in mid-January 2012. Since 2009, Feliú has been the law library director of the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law.
David Mao, deputy law librarian of Congress, will be the new law librarian of Congress beginning January 3, 2012.
April Schwartz, library director and associate professor of law at Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsburg Law Center, was elected to the Long Island Library Council Board of Trustees for a five-year term.
Roberta I. Shaffer, law librarian of Congress, will assume the post of associate librarian for library services at the Library of Congress on January 3, 2012.
