AALL PRESIDENT MEETS WITH LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS
On December 12, AALL President Ronald E. Wheeler Jr., AALL Executive Director Kate Hagan, and Director of Government Relations Emily Feltren met with Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in Washington, DC. During the meeting, President Wheeler spoke about AALL's current priorities, including our innovation incubator and diversity initiatives. We also shared AALL's public policy positions, which include our support for adequate funding for the Library of Congress. AALL looks forward to working with the new Librarian on areas of mutual interest.

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE NAME CHANGE
Last month, AALL's Executive Board voted to approve the request from AALL's Diversity Committee to change its name to the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. The intention of the name change is to broaden the understanding of the committee's mission, making it clear that AALL celebrates the benefits and possibilities of a diverse, complex membership and supports actions to sustain that richness. The committee invites all AALL members to participate in a brief survey by January 15 and to join The Commons—the online community hosted by the committee which serves as a platform for an open discussion of diversity.

LAW LIBRARY JOURNAL CHANGES
As experts in the evolution of legal information to digital formats, the Law Library Journal Review Special Committee was charged with proposing s sustainable model for the continued publication of Law Library Journal without compromising its role as a well-respected scholarly journal.
As announced in April's eNewsletter, at its spring meeting the AALL Executive Board approved the recommendation from the Law Library Journal Review Special Committee to offer increased functionality and shift primary access to the digital edition of LLJ. The changes will provide an invaluable resource to members while reducing costs and environmental impact, specifically:
- As part of our continued partnership with HeinOnline, Law Library Journal will include 20,000+ active links to cited content that is part of the HeinOnline collections (some exclusions apply). This enhancement will be available to all AALL members via the access point on AALLNET.
- With Vol. 109, No. 1 (winter 2017), Law Library Journal will be delivered to members in digital-format via an email announcement as soon as each digital edition is available online. The Journal will continue to be published in print; members who wish to continue receiving print edition may subscribe at the discounted rate of $35 per volume year ($90 savings).

AALL LAUNCHES DAILY NEWSLETTER
Earlier this month, AALL launched KnowItAALL, our daily newsletter, to connect you to news that further engages your library, legal, technological, and professional expertise. We also hope that KnowItAALL supports your passion for law librarianship.
The newsletter was launched after beta testing with 10 percent of randomly selected members. We will continue fine-tuning the newsletter, and look forward to your continued involvement. Please send your thoughts and comments to Megan Mall, director of content strategy.

IFLA APPROVES STATEMENT ON PUBLIC LEGAL INFORMATION
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has approved a new Statement on Government Provision of Public Legal Information in the Digital Age, drafted by AALL members Sally Holterhoff and Marisol Floren with assistance from AALL members Anne Burnett, Leslie Street, and Claire Germain. The statement, which was written on behalf of the IFLA Law Libraries Section, addresses issues related to public access to electronic legal information, including official status, authentication, and preservation. This policy statement has resulted from years of focus and effort on the part of the Law Libraries Section, which became an official IFLA section in 2005.
AALL/ BLOOMBERG BNA CONTINUING EDUCATION GRANT
Does your chapter, special interest section, committee, or caucus have an educational event that needs funding? If so, consider applying for an AALL/Bloomberg BNA Continuing Education Grant. Grant requests are accepted at various times throughout the year. The next deadline for grant applications is March 15.

Leave Treasure Hunts to Pirates: Using Research Plans and Logs to Create Experiential Legal Research Courses
Cassie Rae DuBay, Robert Linz, Anne Lucke, and Donna Wolff discuss a teaching method that uses research plans and logs to help students develop "practice ready" skills in legal research courses. The benefits of using research plans and logs in the law firm setting are also explored. Consider the American Bar Association standards that set out the requirements for experiential courses in law schools, and discover how you can implement the use of research plans and logs to make your courses more practical for students. The panelists also share their experiences using this strategy and describe the process for incorporating this method into the classroom. This program is ideal for any law librarian who wants to highlight the role of planning and analysis in legal research instruction.

FOR THE LEADER IN YOU
Simmering beneath the surface of the library work environment is passive-aggressive behavior. Change, reduced budgets, and increased uncertainty can bring forth anger, and poorly managed anger can take the form of passive-aggression. Left unchecked, this can lead to incomplete projects, poor morale, and bullying in the workplace. Managing your emotions and providing leadership to help others manage theirs is the best prevention.

Joan S. Howland, Roger F. Noreen professor of law and associate dean for information and technology at the University of Minnesota Law School, received the 2017 Section on Law Libraries and Legal Information Award from the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). She will be acknowledged during the 2017 AALS Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Gary Johnson, director of the Shelby County Governmental Law Library, celebrated his 50th year as a librarian on Wednesday, November 23. In his current role, he directs the county law library's operations, including budgeting, staffing, and library services, and reports to a ten-member board that includes nine attorneys and one judge. He spent 26 years working for the Birmingham Public Library, starting as a page and working his way up to library assistant before becoming branch head and finally department head.
Avery Le was selected as the AALL Diversity & Inclusion Committee's December Librarian of the Month.

Mary Ann Roman served as a law librarian for Barnes and Thornburg in Indianapolis, Indiana, and taught classes at the Indiana University Law School until her retirement. She earned her MLS degree from Marian College and was a member of AALL since 1976. In addition, she was a member of the Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section from 1996 to 1999. She passed away October 15, 2016.
Robert S. Ryan served as a librarian at Hill, Farrer & Burrill LLP in Los Angeles, California, until his retirement in 2013. Ryan earned his JD from Albany Law School and promptly began a 40-year career as an attorney and an assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor, before becoming a law librarian. He passed away November 19, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Anita Martin Steele served as professor of law emerita at Seattle University. She received her JD in 1971 from the University of Virginia School of Law, after which she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she obtained a degree in Law Library Science from the University of Washington in 1972. Shortly after, she joined the faculty of a brand-new law school at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, serving as director of the law library and assistant professor of law. Throughout her time there, she was promoted to associate professor and then to professor, while remaining law library director, until her retirement in 1999. She passed away on December 4, 2016.
Barbara A. White was a librarian in Albuquerque, New Mexico until her retirement. A member of the American Association of Law Libraries since 1996, White became a lifetime member upon her retirement. She passed away November 15, 2016.
