AALL EXECUTIVE BOARD SPRING MEETING

The AALL Executive Board held its spring meeting in Chicago, April 7-8. During the meeting they approved the following:

  • The appointment of members Scott Childs and Joseph Custer to the Nominations Committee for a two-year term beginning in July 2017.
  • The Association's form 990 for filing with the IRS.
  • Funding in the amount of $134,000 over a two-year period, to retain a public relations firm with the goal of increasing AALL and member visibility within the legal profession and the general public. 
  • The Association's budget guidelines for fiscal year 2017-2018.
  • The dissolution of the Digital Access to Legal Information Committee, effective July 2018.
  • Cleveland as the site for the 2021 AALL Annual Meeting & Conference.
  • The Association's membership marketing plan for 2017-2018.
  • A recommendation from the Nominations Committee to eliminate candidate's videos from the Conduct of Election Policy and to add an online Candidates Forum.

CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED FOR EXECUTIVE BOARD ELECTION

The Nominations Committee presents the following slate of candidates for the AALL Executive Board. Members will vote for one candidate to serve as president-elect and two candidates to serve as Executive Board members. The election will be held September 29 to October 31, and successful candidates will begin their terms of office in July 2018.

Come "Meet the Candidates" during an informal session at the 2017 AALL Annual Meeting & Conference in Austin on Monday, July 17, from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., in the exhibit hall at the AALL Member Services Pavilion. In early August, biographies and statements of all Executive Board candidates will be posted on AALLNET. As provided in the AALL Bylaws, Section VI 2c, a member may also be nominated for any office by submitting to the secretary, no later than 30 days after the date of this notice, with a nominating petition signed by two percent of the members and the nominee's written acceptance.

ADVOCATE FOR LAW LIBRARIES / AALL'S VIRTUAL LOBBY DAY IS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26

On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, AALL members will join together for our annual Virtual Lobby Day to send a unified message to Capitol Hill in support of AALL's top policy priorities: 

  • Saving the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Legal Services Corporation from elimination.
  • Opposing legislative changes that would weaken the Copyright Office.
  • Supporting the Federal Communications Commission's current net neutrality rules.
  • Enacting updates to protect the privacy of electronic communications.
Participating in Virtual Lobby Day couldn't be easier; all you need is five minutes to influence your members of Congress. Mark your calendars now, and we'll send an email on April 26 with all of the information you need to participate. KEYNOTE SPEAKER ON PBS NEWSHOUR
Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and keynote speaker at AALL 2017, was featured this month in PBS NewsHour's "Brief But Spectacular" series. He discussed the legacy of slavery and racial-based violence, and the impact of silence. Make plans to hear him in person in Austin this summer.

Informal "Discussion Den" chats will be held throughout the conference, and we're looking for great discussion topics. Send your ideas to AALL by May 15.

UELMA ENACTED IN WEST VIRGINIA AND WASHINGTON, DC

AALL celebrated the recent enactment of the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA) in West Virginia and Washington, DC. Thanks to the support of AALL advocates and our chapters, the number of enactments has reached 15. The act also recently passed the legislatures of Maryland and Washington state and awaits signature by those states' governors.

These enactments give us special reason to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of AALL's National Summit on Authentication of Digital Legal Information, which was held in Chicago, April 20-21, 2007. The summit brought together 50 delegates from the judiciary, the legal community, state governments, and AALL leaders to discuss the findings of AALL's State-By-State Report on Authentication of Online Legal Resources, and explore solutions to ensure access to trustworthy state legal materials. The summit led to further study by the Uniform Law Commission, and the eventual approval of UELMA by the Uniform Law Commission and American Bar Association's House of Delegates.

AALL seeks applicants to serve on the 2017-2019 AALL Spectrum Editorial Board, to help develop, solicit, and curate the content of AALL's member magazine. Serving as advisers to the AALL Spectrum editorial director, the board is integral in identifying, shaping, and delivering information about current and emerging trends in law librarianship.

Content for AALL Spectrum relates to six general content areas:

  • Education
  • Information Technology
  • Management & Leadership
  • Transformation of Law

Applicants for the 2017-2019 AALL Spectrum Editorial Board should have expertise in one or more content areas, a strong professional network, and an eagerness to reach out to potential authors. Experience in writing, editing, and publication production will also be considered. PRACTICAL MAGIC: CAPTURING INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE
All libraries have caches of knowledge about their institution—either purposefully compiled or passively accumulated. Sometimes information is a pile of dusty brochures, some old WordPerfect files, or someone's hand-scribbled notes. None of these forms are ideal, but what's worse is when that information is not recorded at all, and lives only in the minds of your colleagues. During this presentation, the presenters discuss how they've sought out and organized information at their own institution, as well as how they use it to help support day-to-day operations, events, donor relations, and exhibits.

Creating a happy work environment might sound like a challenge, but realistically, a happy workplace should be easy for a leader to create simply by knowing your employees. Getting to know your employees and what makes them happy is an important first step in creating a healthy environment. Keeping your employees and co-workers happy and healthy also leads to more productivity. A good leader will create and nurture a happy, healthy, and productive workplace.

  • Denise C. Mines has taken the position of campus librarian at Keiser University Flasgship Campus in West Plam Beach, Florida.
  • Michael Saint-Onge has taken the position of regional director, research and library services at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Los Angeles, California.
  • Jootaek "Juice" Lee was selected as the AALL Diversity & Inclusion Committee's April Librarian of the Month.

MEMORIAL

  • Helen Skuggedal Reed served as a librarian for the William H. Miller Law Library in the Vanderburgh Circuit and Superior Courts. Most recently, she worked as an instructor of organ and harpsichord at the University of Evansville. She was also a principal organist and harpsichordist for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, and organist of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. She passed away March 19, 2017.
