AALL 2017 / REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Registration for the 110th AALL Annual Meeting & Conference is now open! AALL NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE SEEKS CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE

The AALL Nominations Committee is seeking candidates for the upcoming Executive Board elections. To nominate yourself or an AALL colleague, access the nomination forms on AALLNET at bit.ly/EBnominations. Nominations are due by Friday, March 17.

This spring, the seven-member committee will present to the membership a slate of candidates for the 2017 election. They will choose two candidates for the position of vice president/president-elect (2018-2019), and four candidates for two open seats on the Executive Board (2018-2021). In accordance with its charge, the committee must choose candidates who reflect the diversity of AALL's membership, thus ensuring the members of the Executive Board represent a balance of library types, geographic locations, genders, and minorities.

For the 2017 elections, ballots will be distributed electronically to all voting members of the Association in October. The ballots will be tabulated at AALL Headquarters at the beginning of November and election results will be announced immediately.

AALL OFFERS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR YOUR EDUCATION

APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 1

Every year AALL awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to law school and library school students and AALL members. The following scholarships are awarded annually:

  • Library School Scholarships (for those with or without JDs)
  • Law School Scholarships (for those with MLS/MLIS and those seeking dual JD/MLIS)
  • Scholarships for Library School Graduates Seeking a Non-Law Degree
  • LexisNexis John R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship
  • AALL and Thomson Reuters George A. Strait Minority Scholarship
  • Scholarships for Continuing Professional Education Courses
  • Marcia J. Koslov Scholarship for members to attend continuing education programs for state, court, or county law librarians

APPLY FOR AN AALL ANNUAL MEETING GRANT

AALL Annual Meeting Grants cover registration costs at either the meeting or workshops associated with the meeting. Individuals eligible for the Experienced Member Grant are active members with five or more years of AALL or AALL chapter membership. Individuals eligible for the Student/New Member Grant are active members with less than five years of AALL or AALL chapter membership, or student members of AALL or an AALL chapter. Be sure to submit your application by April 1.

LAW LIBRARY JOURNAL CHANGES

As experts in the evolution of legal information to digital formats, the Law Library Journal Review Special Committee was charged with proposing a sustainable model for the continued publication of Law Library Journal without compromising its role as a well-respected scholarly journal.

As announced in the April 2016 eNewsletter, at its spring meeting the AALL Executive Board approved the recommendation from the Law Library Journal Review Special Committee to offer increased functionality and shift primary access to the digital edition of LLJ. The changes will provide an invaluable resource to members while reducing costs and environmental impact, specifically:

  • As part of our continued partnership with HeinOnline, Law Library Journal will include 20,000+ active links to cited content that is part of the HeinOnline collections (some exclusions apply).This enhancement will be available to all AALL members via the access point on AALLNET.

  • With Vol. 109, No. 1 (Winter 2017), Law Library Journal will be delivered to members in digital-format via an email announcement as soon as each digital edition is available online. The Journal will continue to be published in print; members who wish to continue receiving print edition may subscribe at the discounted rate of $35 per volume year ($90 savings).

AALL/BLOOMBERG BNA CONTINUING EDUCATION GRANT

Does your chapter, special interest section, committee, or caucus have an educational event that needs funding? If so, consider applying for an AALL/Bloomberg BNA Continuing Education Grant. Grant requests are accepted at various times throughout the year. The next deadline for grant applications is March 15.

Design Thinking for Libraries: Rethinking the User Experience

Gain practical guidance on how to develop programming or create spaces that meet patron needs. Presented at the 2016 AALL Annual Meeting, Chicago Public Library colleagues set out to learn how their patrons view and use the library with the goal of innovating (or adjusting) services and outreach. With their focus on building empathy for patrons and openness to brainstorming and running simple experiments, the librarians were able to introduce low cost programs to bring patron groups together, or reimagine spaces to suit the needs of diverse users. Learn how you can design what is feasible, viable, and desirable, while gaining buy-in from library leadership, colleagues, patrons, and other stakeholders.

  • Carolyn Brown was selected as the AALL Diversity & Inclusion Committee's February Librarian of the Month.
  • David S. Mao has resigned from his position as deputy librarian of Congress, closing an 11-year tenure at the institution where he also served as acting librarian of Congress. He has accepted a position with the Georgetown University Law Center as assistant vice president of administration and Law Center chief of staff, a position in which he'll oversee administration of the law school.
  • Holly Riccio has been selected as a member of ILTA's (International Legal Technology Association) inaugural Talent Council.
  • Kris Turner has been appointed head of reference at the University of Wisconsin Law Library in Madison, Wisconsin. Turner previously served as reference and technology services librarian at her institution.
