AALL Spectrum Member to Member Question

If you read AALL Spectrum, you may have noticed a new department called "Member to Member." In this department we pose a question relating to AALL or law librarianship and publish three to five answers to the question from members. The question for the April 2006 issue of Spectrum is:

If money were no object, how would you celebrate AALL’s centennial anniversary?

AALL members can submit an answer for potential publication in Spectrum. We are looking for short (one paragraph or less), interesting answers to the question. We will select up to five of the responses submitted for publication each month. If we select yours, we will contact you for permission before publishing it. Responses are due February 10, 2006.

Selection of responses will be done by AALL Spectrum Editorial Director Paul Healey in conjunction with AALL Director of Publications Julia O’Donnell. Please send your responses to Paul and Julia by Friday, February 10.

AALL Calendar of Professional Education Events

After much teamwork on the part of Lyonette Louis-Jacques, her task force, Education Summit participants, the Executive Board, and headquarters staff, we now have a fully interactive calendar of professional education events. This calendar lists a broad range of education opportunities available in nearly every part of the country. It’s a great new resource that answers a prime need identified by Education Summit participants last fall. If you are an AALL member, feel free to post your event through the interactive form. If you are not a member please feel free to submit your event to the calendar administrator.

Copyright Office Issues Orphan Works Final Report

The Copyright Office has completed its study of problems related to 'orphan works'-copyrighted works whose owners may be impossible to identify and locate. As requested by Senator Orrin Hatch and Senator Patrick Leahy, the Office submitted its Report on Orphan Works to the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 31, 2006.

Call for Papers: The Fourth International Conference on the Book

Dear Colleague,

I am writing on behalf of the Organizing Committee, to inform you of
the call for papers for the:

THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE BOOK
Emerson College, Boston, USA, 20-22 October 2006
http://www.Book-Conference.com

The conference will address a range of critically important themes relating to the book - including the past, present and future of publishing, libraries, literacy and learning in the information society. Main speakers will include leading thinkers and innovators in the areas of publishing, editing, librarianship, printing, authorship and information technologies, as well as numerous presentations by researchers and practitioners. Publishers, librarians, academics, teachers, authors and associated professionals are all welcome to attend.

I would particularly like to invite you to respond to the conference call for papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for consideration before or after the conference in the fully refereed International Journal of the Book. If you are unable to attend the conference in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal, and give you access to the electronic version of the journal.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 28 February 2006. Proposals are reviewed within four weeks of submission. Full details of the conference, including an online call for papers form, are to be found at the conference website.

We look forward to receiving your proposals and hope you will be able to join us in Boston in October 2006.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr David Emblidge
Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing

Google Librarian Newsletter

A tip of the hat to Pat Turpening, Head, Preservation & Archives at the
University of Cincinnati College of Law Robert S. Marx Law Library, for alerting us to the fact that Google now has a newsletter for librarians.

As the newsletter’s editor, Jodi Healy, said in the inaugural issue:

"This newsletter was conceived at the 2005 ALA conference in Chicago, where Google hosted a booth in the exhibit hall. We spent three days chatting with librarians about Google: what you liked, what you didn't like, and where you saw opportunities to work together to help people find useful, relevant information.

In an effort to keep those conversations going, we're launching this newsletter. Consider it a first step toward what we hope will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship. We anticipate sending it out quarterly, with the occasional special feature as appropriate."

British & Irish Association of Law Libraries Handbook of Legal Information Management

For this new handbook, BIALL (British and Irish Association of Law Librarians), has brought together an unparalleled team of respected experts. They provide authoritative and up-to-date best practice guidance on the key legal information issues for every type of service, focusing particularly on the balance between electronic and printed resources, free and charged services, and electronic and on-site access.

Beginning with a survey of the growth of law librarianship, and an analysis of different types of services and users, the Handbook discusses research techniques for hard copy and electronic information, giving tips on how to ‘know it all and find it fast’. Subsequent chapters describe how to source and organize different types of legal information; how to choose and purchase library management systems; and how to manage budgets and financial demands.

A chapter on staff management, training and professional development looks both at practical day-to-day staff concerns and future skills issues. Other chapters cover copyright, data protection and ethical issues; knowledge management; and virtual learning environments.

The Handbook concludes with examples of a variety of legal information services which describe the particular professional demands and conditions that they present.

Are We Safer in the Dark?
A Sunshine Week National Dialogue on Open Government and Secrecy

OpenTheGovernment.org, the American Association of Law Libraries, the American Library Association, the American Society of Newspaper Editors/Sunshine Week, the Coalition of Journalists for Open Government, the League of Women Voters, the National Freedom of Information Coalition, the Special Libraries Association, and the Association of Research Libraries are collaborating on a national teleconference to be held on March 13, 2006 to celebrate Sunshine Week.

The first national "Sunshine Week: Your Right to Know" was launched in March 2005. Our goal in sponsoring this national dialogue is to raise awareness of the importance of open government to everyone in your community.

WHEN?
March 13, 2006, 1-2:30 pm ET. We encourage host sites to sponsor a local program following the national teleconference

WHY?
Hurricane Katrina made clear the important role of government in protecting the American public. Sadly, the federal government has expanded secrecy and limited the public's ability to know what government is doing. What about your community? Is the government at all levels telling the public enough to ensure the safety of our families and our communities?

WHAT?
A national panel of experts from around the country will discuss open government and secrecy -- the problems we are facing with it, how it impacts communities, and what the public can do about it. Locally sponsored programs in communities around the country could discuss how communities can keep all levels of government open. The event will consist of a panel discussion starting in Washington, DC, linked via satellite to locally hosted discussions in communities across the country.

HOW LAW LIBRARIES CAN PARTICIPATE?
We invite law libraries to host the satellite feed, sponsor and market the event, and work with others in your community to organize the local program. You'll find preliminary information, including a program description. Please check that site regularly for updates.

Register online through February 15th to take advantage of the $200 early-bird registration. The registration deadline is March 6th. We encourage you to join this important effort and help make it a huge success!

Thank you very much,

Farewells

Last month Holley and Larry Thompson retired from LexisNexis. They both were great supporters of AALL and the library profession. The Opening Event at our Centennial Annual Meeting in St. Louis this July just won’t be the same without their enthusiastic smiling presence. As Holley said in a recent communication, "We decided it was time to explore new adventures and challenges and look forward to new opportunities ahead. We are ending a combined 50 plus years working in the librarian and legal markets, during which time we had fantastic opportunities to spend time with many amazing professionals."

Also last month Steven Oberhoffer, AALL Membership Services Coordinator, transitioned to a new position with another association. We wish him success in his future endeavors. We are conducting a search for his replacement and hope to have an individual in place in the very near future. Watch this space for further information.

Sincerely,
