Raquel Ortiz Selected as AALLNET Coordinator

I am very pleased to announce that this week we selected Raquel Ortiz, Head of Reference Services for the Pappas Law Library at Boston University, as AALL’s AALLNET Coordinator. This newly created part-time position manages the content of AALLNET and coordinates content submissions with AALL entity providers. Importantly, it is the Coordinator’s responsibility to direct and insure the archival content functions of the web site.

Raquel was Chair of the AALLNET Advisory Committee for 2004-2005, immediate Past President of the Law Libraries of New England (LLNE), and current Chair of the Latino Caucus. She’s an extraordinarily talented organizer who has an excellent grasp of the profession, AALL programs and activities, and comes to the position with superb communication skills.

Congratulations, Raquel!

Education Summit to Take Place September 23-24

The AALL Education Summit, generously sponsored by BNA, Inc., will take place next weekend at The Lodge in Oak Brook, Illinois. The invitees include representatives from 26 Chapters and 11 of our Special Interest Sections. We will be working toward the following outcomes:

  • Clarify and agree on a common definition of "professional development"

  • Clarify and agree on appropriate roles and responsibilities of AALL entities in planning and executing professional development programs [AALL, Chapters and Special Interest Sections]

  • Create and agree on an appropriate business model for the delivery of professional development

  • Identify critical, general [high level] areas of content to be addressed during the next three years.

We will be reporting back to you soon about the results of this important meeting, which will help us move forward in our Strategic Directions 2005-2010.

Remember to visit AALL LawLib Assist...

to get the latest news about your colleagues affected by Hurricane Katrina and what the law librarian and legal community is doing to help.

For example, one recent entry reported that New York's Unified Court System has organized a contingent of up to 400 volunteer court officials to help the legal communities of Louisiana and Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye said that in light of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, "We have a very special expertise ... We know what it's like to have courtrooms brought to a standstill." The volunteers are set to help in such areas as court security, records recovery and the creation of temporary court sites.

Opportunities Fund Available to Assist Committees and SISs in Furthering Strategic Directions

Two years ago the Executive Board created an Opportunities Fund to help AALL respond nimbly to opportunities that would advance the association in important ways. This fund is additionally available to Committees and SISs who have an innovative idea or project that will help advance our goals of Leadership, Education and Advocacy for the profession and for our members. Feel free to contact me or any member of the board with your initiative and we will bring it into consideration for funding.

Day in the Life Polls Are Open!

The "Day in the Life of the Law Library Community" photo contest is in the final stage of judging. Members of the AALL Public Relations Committee have narrowed down the nearly 200 entries to the top five in each category, and you now have the chance to vote for your favorite photos.

September 12-26 AALL members will choose the best photo in each category and one best overall photo. Simply login with your AALLNET members-only e-mail and password. Please note that you will only be able to vote once.

"Day in the Life of the Law Library Community," sponsored by the AALL Public Relations Committee, is a nation-wide photo contest to document law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given work week. Winners will be recognized in fall 2005 on AALLNET, in the December 2005 issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the 2006 AALL Annual Meeting in St. Louis.

Please send any questions or comments to Public Relations Committee Chair Phill Johnson.

New Director of Finance & Administration on Board

Lynn Cotteleer is now officially on board as AALL’s newest Director of Finance & Administration. She’s learning the systems very quickly and tells us she is very excited to get to know the law librarian community. She’s quick to be of help, so don’t hesitate to contact her with any question or suggestion. Welcome, Lynn! Lynn Cotteleer

Meanwhile, our past Director of Finance & Administration, Steven Ligda, knows how to retire well. He just returned from a cruise to Alaska with his lovely wife, Winnie, and in two weeks takes off for a week in Tuscany. He deserves the good life after all the good years devoted to AALL. Bon Voyage, Steve!

Sincerely,

Susan E. Fox, CAE
