This Hurricane Season...

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all our law librarian colleagues who are affected by this relentless hurricane season.

AALL Candidate Biographies Now on AALLNET

The AALL candidate biographies and statements are now available on AALLNET. Please be sure to take a moment to read through them.

As a reminder, the schedule for the AALL elections will change dramatically this year. Instead of sending ballots out by postal service, the Association will
Vote Online
distribute and tabulate ballots electronically. The elections will also occur four months earlier in November instead of March.

Here is the election schedule:

October 9, 2004: Deadline for receipt of petition candidates.

November 15, 2004: Ballots distributed electronically to all voting members (those who wish may receive paper ballots upon request to Gina Bordeleon, 312-939-4764, ext. 12, by October 1).

December 15, 2004: Deadline for receipt of electronic ballots at AALL. Ballots tabulated at AALL, and results of elections announced immediately.

AALL Awards Committee Call for Nominations

The AALL Awards Committee recognizes the accomplishments of its members and others who excel in the profession. The Awards Committee will consider candidates for the awards described here.

Additional information for all awards, including application forms and previous recipients, may be found on AALLNET. Recipients will be recognized at the Annual Meeting in San Antonio. All nominations must be postmarked by February 1, 2005, unless otherwise noted.

Apply for an AALL/Aspen Research Grant

The AALL Research Committee of is accepting applications through October 28, 2004, for the AALL/Aspen Publishers Grants Program, totaling up to $5,000 in awards.

The committee will award one or more grants to library professionals who wish to conduct research that supports the research/scholarly agenda of the profession of librarianship. The grants program funds small or large research projects that create, disseminate, or otherwise use legal and law-related information as its focus. Projects may range from historical (indexes, legislative histories, bibliographies, biographies, or directories) to theoretical (trends in cataloging and publishing or new service models in libraries) to practical (implementation models for collection, personnel, or infrastructure management).

The AALL Research Agenda offers suggestions for possible research projects that cover a wide segment of professional interest, including: the profession of law librarianship, law library patrons, law library services, legal research and bibliography, legal information resources, and law library facilities. However, projects are not limited to those described in the agenda, and the committee will consider all applications and research projects.

IMLS Updates National Leadership Grant Program

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has updated its National Leadership Grant program. Program categories have been renamed and clarified to improve cross-agency consistency. Under the National Leadership Grant, the three categories for museums, three categories for libraries, and one joint category have been streamlined to three parallel categories across the museum and library programs. These are "advancing learning communities," "building digital resources," and "research and demonstration."

The 2005 National Leadership Grant guidelines will be available on the IMLS Web site in October of 2004. The deadline for all National Leadership Grant categories is February 1, 2005. Grants will be awarded in mid-September. Applicants may request $25,000 to $1,000,000.

"Creating Library Leaders for the 21st Century: What It Takes to Take the Lead" 2004 LAMA National Institute

The third Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) National Institute will take place in the Wyndham Palm Springs Hotel, Palm Springs, California, November 18-20, 2004. Institute programs will be offered in two series running concurrently. Institute attendees will have the opportunity to attend all six sessions. Learn from the experts-and from each other.

Dr. Carla Hayden, 2004 ALA president, one of Ms. Magazine's 2003 Women of the Year, and executive director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, will give the conference keynote and capstone addresses.
