Connecting Locally and Globally

While reading through a series of chapter newsletters this week I was once again struck by how effectively law librarians support and educate one another. From New York to Ohio to Dallas to Southern California, you connect with one another and give each other the inspiration, encouragement and intellectual tools necessary to become the best you can be in a field that requires constant adaptation to radical change.

This interconnectedness – members to chapters, chapters to AALL, AALL in turn to chapters and then further outward to our national and international alliances, truly proves the strength of the adage “Think globally, act locally.” The chapter newsletters communicate loud and clear that you dream big dreams and have the results to show for it. As Eugenie Prime, Manager of Hewlett Packard’s corporate libraries, said in her plenary speech at AALL’s annual meeting, “The best way to predict the future is to be the future.”

Price Index for Legal Publications

The Price Index for Legal Publications, 2nd ed. has recently been updated to include 2002 data. It is posted in the Members Only section of our website. The Index reports average costs of titles and percentage changes over prior years for legal periodicals, newsletters, loose-leaf services, court reporters, digests, codes, citators and supplemented treatises. An added feature this year is a listing of the 915 titles included in the Index. The Index is the result of work by the Price Index for Legal Publications Advisory Committee, chaired by Richard Vaughan, and the editor, Anne Poulter. The Committee is currently working on making a proposal to include electronic resources in the future.

Credit Where Credit Is Due

In last week’s From the Desk Of reporting on AALL’s filing a brief in a prisoners' rights case (Henderson vs. Crosby), I neglected to give much deserved credit to our Social Responsibilities SIS for contributing significant funding so that the brief could be written.

2004 Program Committee to Meet

This weekend the 2004 Annual Meeting Program Committee will meet in Chicago to assess program proposals for next year’s annual meeting: From Boston to Mumbai: The World of Legal Information. We received 230 submissions and at this time (always subject to change) it looks like we will fill 66 program slots. Gail Warren, Program Committee Chair, reports:

Watching the east coast prepare for hurricane Isabel’s fury, right on the heels of the recent memorial events for the victims of September 11th, we are reminded our world is constantly changing. Yet, one thing remains a constant – AALL’s members require relevant, informative educational programming. The 2004 AMPC hopes to provide Annual Meeting programs that not only meet our member’s educational needs, but also nourishes their spirit in an ever-changing environment.

The Program Committee also deserves a special pat on the back for completing their initial review and ranking of those 230 submissions in just 17 days!

Meet the Staff

Kim RundleKim Rundle, Executive Assistant to the Executive Director, provides administrative support to me, the Executive Board (especially the President and Vice President) and to AALL’s leadership group. Her attention to detail is superb and she is the one who keeps track of the multitude of deadlines essential to running an effective association. She also is the one who facilitates the information flow at headquarters and keeps a full candy jar on her desk to help sweeten the task. She’s a good first person to ask when you have any question about AALL policies, process, or procedures.

Marina TowersKim lives in downtown Chicago in one of the most photographed buildings in the world, Marina Towers. It was home to the Bob Newhart Show and was also the famous scene from a Steve McQueen movie where the car drives off the edge of the parking garage into the Chicago River.

Trivia question: what was the name of that movie?
