2005 AALL Biennial Salary Survey is Online

The AALL 2005 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics is now available for free in the members-only section of AALLNET.

This brand-new edition is the only source for up-to-date information about salaries for law librarians and other law library employees who work in academic libraries; private firms and corporate libraries; and state, court, and county law libraries. The survey is customized to provide information unique to the needs of these types of libraries, including position, region, gender, education, years in current position, years of experience, and membership in AALL. The section on organizational characteristics examines the salary data within the context of the size of library budgets, staff, and user ratios.

The survey was carried out this May through August in complete confidentiality by Association Research, Inc., a professional research firm in Rockville, Maryland, that works exclusively with nonprofit organizations.

Printed copies of the 2005 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be available for purchase and shipment in October; $110 for AALL members and $175 for nonmembers. The Association is accepting advance orders by e-mail at orders@aall.org, by fax at 312/431-1097, or by calling AALL Headquarters at 312/939-4764, extension 12.

AALL Education Summit Report

Approximately 70 volunteers representing AALL Chapters, SISs, Executive Board and others came together on September 23-24 to discuss strategies for continuing education and the professional development of law librarians outside of our annual meeting programs. The summit helped us identify priorities and set strategies for the next three years. The group established agreement around the roles of the three entities (Chapters, SISs, AALL) and articulated five areas that are most crucial for success:

  • Grant funding to help course developers create new educational programming

  • Repackaging annual meeting materials/programs for distribution outside of the annual meeting

  • Creating a clearinghouse/calendar of educational opportunities

  • Creating a speakers’ bureau database

  • Providing technical expertise and a technical platform to assist Chapters and SISs in their educational activities.

President Claire Germain is working with the Executive Board in appointing task forces to create a structured approach and framework on how to provide an integrated professional development program for the next three years. The next board meeting is October 14-15 and the board plans to spend half a day discussing and ratifying next steps from the summit. You will learn more about this work as it unfolds.

Meanwhile, the technical team here at headquarters is working hard on creating a robust calendaring system that will provide an overview of educational opportunities nationwide.

Congratulations to the Winning Photographs in the "Day in the Life of the Law Library Community" Contest

During National Library Week 2005 (April 10-16), AALL members took a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day or week. Fifty-five AALL members from 47 different law libraries across the country submitted more than 180 photos to the contest. Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to each and every member who participated and shared their photos with AALL. Winning photographs may be viewed on AALLNET.
