2003 Salary Survey Available Free to AALL Members

The AALL 2003 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics is available FREE in the Members Only section AALLNET.

This comprehensive report is the only source for up-to-date information about salaries for law librarians and other law library employees who work in 1) academic libraries, 2) private firms and corporate libraries, and 3) state, court and county libraries. The survey is customized to provide information unique to the needs of these three types of institutional libraries, including position, region, gender, education, years in current position, years of experience and membership in AALL. The section on organizational characteristics examines the salary data within the context of the size of library budgets, staff and user ratios.

The printed version of the AALL 2003 Biennial Salary Survey and Organizational Characteristics will be available for purchase and shipment in mid-November; $110 for AALL members and $175 for nonmembers. We are accepting advance orders online and by email, by fax at 312/431-1097, or by phone at 312/939-4764, extension 12.

New Copyright Rules Fail to Provide Fair Access in a Digital World

The Information Access Alliance (AALL, Association of Research Libraries, American Library Association, and Medical Library Association) issued a press release this morning expressing disappointment in the new copyright rules for the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA). Under Librarian of Congress James Billington’s ruling, the law will continue to disallow legitimate and customary uses of digital materials by libraries and schools. Full text of the press release can be found on the AALL Washington Office web site.

Annual Meeting Deadlines Approaching

It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to start planning for the 2004 Annual Meeting in Boston! Important deadlines loom:

November 1: Deadline for returning Preliminary Scheduling Forms for Committees, SIS, Chapters and Caucuses to schedule meetings and events. This deadline ensures that your meeting/event will be listed in the Preliminary Program. Forms can also be faxed to Pam Reisinger, Director of Meetings, at (312) 431-1097.

November 15: Deadline for Annual Meeting Program Coordinators to submit Speaker Control Forms to Heidi Letzmann, Program Coordinator for Meetings and Special Events, at fax: (312) 431-1097.

The Call for Papers Has Begun

Have you been thinking of writing an article of interest to law librarians? Maybe you just need a push to get started? Whether for fame or fortune, this is your chance to enter the AALL/LexisNexis™ Call for Papers competition.

The AALL/LexisNexis™ Call for Papers Committee is soliciting articles in three categories: Open Division for AALL members and law librarians with five or more years of professional experience, New Members Division for recent graduates and AALL members who have been in the profession for less than five years, and Student Division for budding law librarians still in school (students need not be members of AALL).

The winner in each division receives $750 generously donated by Lexis/Nexis™, plus the opportunity to present his or her paper at a special program during the AALL Annual Meeting in Boston. Winning papers will also be considered for publication in Law Library Journal.

Submissions must be postmarked by March 1. If you have any questions please contact Kathryn Hensiak or Virginia Davis.

Meet the Staff

Arek Tarasiewicz: AALL’s Web AdministratorArek Tarasiewicz is AALL’s Web Administrator. He keeps AALLNET current, and helps maintain the voluminous amount of information that is available there. He also administers our 98 (!) discussion lists and most recently gave the web site a bright new look. When not working on the web site, he is a certified Hatha yoga instructor leading several yoga classes throughout the Chicago area. He was even featured in the Teacher of the Month article in YogaChicago!

I also extend warm welcome to Julia O’Donnell, who joined the staff last week as our Director of Publications. She brings excellent skills to AALL and she’s a lovely addition to the staff. Look for her profile here in the near future.

Sincerely,
