Just as the U.S. enters midterm elections, so do we at AALL begin our own election season. AALL polls open today and run until December 1st for you to vote for President-Elect, Treasurer, and Executive Board Members. Because the election is held online it takes only a few seconds of your time. Elections are an important way of supporting the work of AALL so please be sure to submit your vote today.
Last summer Spectrum Editorial Director Paul Healey announced that he would be stepping down in 2007 at the conclusion of his term. The LLJ/Spectrum Advisory Committee and I solicited applications for Paul’s replacement and earlier this month interviewed three strong candidates. I am pleased to announce that we selected Mark Estes, Director of Library Services, Holme Roberts & Owen LLP, as Paul’s successor. Mark is very active in AALL affairs and served as President in 1992-1993.
The Continuing Professional Education Committee is pleased to announce that in the first round of applications, the following groups were awarded grants for educational programs:
Atlanta Law Libraries Association, Michigan Chapter of the Association of Libraries, New Orleans Association of Law Librarians, South Eastern Chapter of the Association of Law Librarians, Tarlton Law Library, and a program arranged by AALL with SLA in Kentucky.
The Committee is now accepting applications for the second round of grant proposals due on November 27th. For more information, see here.
Our partners at CCH a Wolters Kluwer business have recently notified us that the 2006-2007 AALL Directory and Handbook was mailed out to AALL members by October 23. You can expect to receive your copy by November 6. Many thanks go to CCH for graciously subsidizing production costs of the directory since 1940.
The AALL Membership and Retention Committee is sponsoring a 500-word writing contest to find out why membership in AALL is important to you. We want to know what you’ve gained and what you value from your membership, including illustrative examples or anecdotes. Three winners will receive free full registrations to the New Orleans Meeting next summer. Judging criteria will be based on originality, creativity, and quality and clarity of writing.
So, rise to the challenge! As we embark on AALL’s second 100 years, we invite you to tell us the reasons why you belong to AALL.

Dust off your cameras and start scoping out the perfect shot. A Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest is coming back in February 2007.
During the month of February, AALL members will take a wide range of photographs of law librarians working, meeting, teaching, and doing all that law librarians do in a given day. Entries will be due by the end of the month, and they will be judged online by the membership in April. Winners will be recognized on AALLNET, in the July 2007 issue of AALL Spectrum, and during the AALL Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
Visit the Day in the Life site for complete contest rules, photography tips, and the winning 2005 photos.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) invites libraries, archives, and library agencies, associations, and consortia to apply for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant program. The program supports efforts to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians and the faculty who will prepare them for careers in library science. It also supports grants for research related to library education and library staffing needs; curriculum development; an early career development program for untenured, tenure-track library, and information science faculty; and continuing education and training.
Guidelines are available on the IMLS Web site. The application deadline is December 15. Awards will be announced in mid-June 2007.
I am sad to report that Joyce Malden, long active in AALL affairs, passed away last week. Her many contributions to AALL and the field include Chapter President of the Chicago Association of Law Libraries, 1970-71; AALL Headquarters Committee, Chair: 1975-76; AALL Treasurer: 1976-83; Special Committee on Financial Planning 1982-84; and Chair, Financial Advisory Committee, 1986-88. She will be dearly missed.
Sincerely,

Susan E. Fox, CAE
