Make Things Happen - Volunteer for a Committee!
Summer is winding down, stores are full of back-to-school sales, many of us are gearing up for fall terms of school or court, but believe-it-or-not, it’s also time to think about the AALL committees that will begin operating in July of next year! While July may seem far away, and you may not be sure what you’ll be doing by then, it is certain that if you become involved in an AALL committee, next July you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Meet new people,
- Learn new things,
- Work on interesting and important projects,
- Bring your ideas and perspectives to the work of AALL,
- Make things happen in your profession!
Committees perform a wide range of activities and cover a variety of interests, so whether your passion is advocacy or awards, government relations or grants, recruitment or research, there’s something just right for you! Check out the complete list of AALL Committees on AALLNET. From there, you can click on "profile" to see the committee’s charge, or "website" to find out more about the committee’s current work.
Mystified by how programs get picked for the annual meeting? This year you have the opportunity to volunteer for the committee that selects them! In recent history, the Annual Meeting Program Committee has been appointed outside the regular committee volunteer process. But, due to strong member interest and the critical importance of our annual meeting programs, this year I’m including the Annual Meeting Program Committee on the list of volunteer opportunities. Although the official deadline for all committee volunteering is December 1, if you are interested in the Program Committee, please volunteer early – by November 1 - as this committee starts operating in February and needs to be appointed as soon as possible!
While not every member who volunteers can be appointed to a committee, I assure you that everyone who volunteers will be given full consideration. I’m especially committed to appointing members from all types of law libraries to our committees. To be a strong organization we need the varying perspectives of everyone – law firm, law school, court, bar association, corporation, government agency, independent, vendor – everyone!
We also need the contributions of both experienced and newer members – not all appointments require years of experience. Not sure you can come to next year’s annual meeting? Attendance is not essential for all committee positions. So don’t delay - volunteer today by completing and submitting the Committee Volunteer Form. Deadline is December 1 (or earlier if you are volunteering for the Annual Meeting Program Committee). Thanks, and have a great fall!
Sincerely,

Ann T. Fessenden
