Make History — Volunteer for an AALL Committee!
From the very beginning of our Association back in 1906, AALL members and leaders have depended on committees to tackle important issues and carry out tasks large and small. A look at A. J. Small’s presidential address printed in volume 1 of Law Library Journal reveals that by 1907, the new American Association of Law Libraries already had at least three committees at work (on legal bibliography, exchange of legal works, and indexing of legal periodicals) and the creation of several more was under discussion.
Through the years since then, AALL has grown, prospered, and carried out its mission with the help of a succession of committees, composed of generations of hard-working member volunteers. Committee work has surely changed through the years, and today’s committees carry out their charges using technology that would have astounded our founders. Descriptions of our current committees and the work they accomplish can be found in the AALL Committees section of AALLNET.
As we prepare to celebrate AALL’s centennial, I invite you to do your part by volunteering for service on an AALL committee for 2006-2007. Now, more than ever, we need skilled and dedicated volunteers to keep the Association moving forward in our three strategic directions of advocacy, education, and leadership.
For this year we’ve made a few changes to the Committee Volunteer Form in order to encourage members from all constituencies of AALL to apply. We strive to fill our committee positions with people of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, so that many voices will be heard on significant issues. As you may be aware, in some recent years it hasn’t always been possible to find a committee slot for every individual who volunteers. But we still hope to attract a strong pool of applicants with the time, support, and interest to be active committee members. Please
don’t forget that committee membership, while very important, is only one of the available ways for you to get involved. Wherever your talents and interests lie, and whether you can give a lot of time or just a small amount, there are opportunities that are just right for you in AALL committees, SISs, and chapters.
As we prepare to celebrate our Association’s 100th anniversary, there is no better way to honor our tradition and to tackle the challenges of the future than by serving on an AALL committee. Think about what contribution you can make to the start of AALL’s second century. The possibilities are great, and the time is right, so please volunteer!
Sincerely,

Sarah (Sally) Holterhoff
