Plans Underway for 2008 Joint Study Institute at Georgetown University Law Center

To begin the second series of Joint Study Institutes (JSI), AALL will host the next institute, to be held in spring or summer of 2008 at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. Co-chairing the JSI 2008 Planning Committee are Tim Coggins and Darcy Kirk. Members of the committee include James Duggan, Mark Engsberg, Judy Gaskell, Kumar Percy Jayasuriya, Steve Margeton, Bob Oakley, and Herb Somers. AALL Education Manager Celeste Smith is an ex-officio member.

The Joint Study Institutes, begun in Cambridge in 1998, have been held biennially since then, co-sponsored by the British and Irish Association of Law Libraries (BIALL), the Canadian Association of Law Libraries/Association Canadienne des Bibliotheques de Droit, the Australian Law Librarians’ Association (formerly the Australian Law Librarians’ Group), and AALL. Each institute focuses on the host country’s legal heritage and traditions. JSI is intended to attract delegates primarily from countries of the other sponsoring organizations, although not excluding attendees from the host country. Previously AALL sponsored the 2000 JSI at Yale Law School. The 2006 Institute was held in August in Oxford, England, hosted by BIALL.

AALL Member Selected for New Library of Congress Working Group

Bibliographic control in the future is the focus of a new group convened by the Library of Congress. The Working Group on the Future of Bibliographic Control consists of a chair and nine members, including Richard Amelung of Saint Louis University Law Library, who represents AALL. The group’s inaugural meeting was held at the Library of Congress, November 2-3.

They plan to hold three regional meetings during 2007, each focusing on one of these three broad categories: uses and users, structures and standards, and economics and organization. The group intends to issue a draft report by September 1, 2007, and a final report by November 1, 2007. A special public Web site was set up to provide additional information about the working group.
