Library Acquisitions and Collection Development
This two-day workshop examines the intricacies of selecting and purchasing legal
information in an electronic world. Explore collection development issues in today's
environment of multiple formats and media. Then examine the way we conduct business with
vendors now and how that may change in the future.
The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize law librarians from all settings with the
realities of selecting and purchasing legal information in an electronic world. There is a
new layer of issues that must now be considered in addition to the traditional criteria
impacting the selection of legal information. The program examines collection development
issues in today's environment of multiple formats and media, outsourcing as a possible
solution to some issues, budgeting and financial management as well as conducting business
with vendors.
This workshop addresses Specialized Competency 5: Collection Care and Management in
the AALL Competencies of Law Librarianship.
After attending this workshop,
Participants will be able to:
- Examine and review collection development issues in today's environment of multiple
formats and media
- Develop and incorporate a policy on electronic resources into the collection development
policy of their organization
- Identify how new technologies are used in the selection, collection development and
acquisitions process
- Identify major trends in legal information pricing
- Examine the tools necessary to develop financial statements
- Develop methods to effectively deal with vendors in the "electronic age".
Who Should Attend the Program?
This program is designed for law librarians who are responsible for acquisitions and
collection development in their organizations.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days.
This program was developed by Cynthia Aninao, Acquisitions Librarian, University of
Cincinnati College of Law in collaboration with the Acquisitions Committee of the
Technical Services SIS.

Instructors
Christine Graesser is an Information Specialist for Brown, Rudnick, Freed &
Gesmer in Hartford, Connecticut. She holds an MLS from the University of Washington.
Graesser was a member of the AALL Committee on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV)
for four years and served as its Chair during 2000-01. She is also a past president of the
Southern New England Law Librarians Association.
JoAnn Hounshell is the Head of Acquisitions at the Pritzker Legal Research Center
at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. Hounshell received her MLS from
Catholic University of America. Hounshell has previously worked at George Mason University
School of Law Library, NASA and the University of Virginia. She is currently the Chair of
AALL's Technical Services SIS.
Janis Johnston is the Director of the Law Library at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. She holds an MLS from the University of Illinois and a JD from
Indiana University. Johnston has been a member of the AALL Board of Directors from 1998
through 2001, serving as Treasurer and as a member of the Executive Finance and Budget
Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.
Patrick Kehoe is Professor of Law and Director of the Law Library at American
University Washington College of Law Library. Kehoe received both his MLL and JD from the
University of Washington. He has previously worked at Yale and the University of Houston
and the University of Washington. Kehoe is former President of AALL and the author of
numerous books and articles.
Scott Larson is a law librarian at the Washington, DC firm of Beveridge &
Diamond PC. He received his MLS from Kent State University.
Phyllis Marion is Director of the Library and Professor at California Western
School of Law. Prior to joining California Western she held various positions at William
Mitchell College of Law Library and the University of Minnesota Law Library. She received
her MA in Library Science from the University of Chicago and her JD from William Mitchell
College of Law. Marion has spoken at many meetings, institutes and workshops on cataloging
and technical services topics.
James Mumm is the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian at Marquette University Law
Library in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his MLS from the University of Wisconsin -
Milwaukee and has served as Chair of AALL's Technical Services SIS. Mumm has presented at
various AALL workshops on technical services issues.
