Basic Law Cataloging
At this AALL Professional Development workshop, learn the basics of law cataloging as well
as the nuts and bolts of legal subject headings and the classification of U.S. Legal
materials, looseleafs, and electronic materials.
During this two and a half day workshop, participants will learn the basics of law
cataloging. A combination of presentations, group exercises, and breakout sessions will
focus on descriptive cataloging, choice of main entry and access points, LC subject
headings, LC classification for U.S. legal materials, serials/looseleaf cataloging, MARC
tagging, cataloging of electronic materials and authority work.
Participants will learn to:
- Perform full-level bibliographic description using AACR2 Rev. for print and electronic
resources
- Choose the main entry for a work
- Identify works that require uniform titles and create uniform titles for those works
- Assign LC classification numbers for KF (Law of the U.S.) and apply the tables
- Assign basic LC subject headings and subdivisions
- Develop local practice guidelines for smaller libraries
Basic Law Cataloging addresses Specialized Competency 5: Collection Care and
Management in the AALL Competencies of Law Librarianship.
Who Should Attend This Program?
This program is designed for new law librarians who are not familiar with law
cataloging or those who need a refresher course.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on days 1 and 2, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. on day 3.

Manual on AACR2R and Library of Congress Subject Headings for Legal Materials. 3rd ed.

Instructors:
Richard Amelung received his MALS from the University of Missouri, Columbia in
1981. He has been the Head of Technical Services at St. Louis University Law Library since
1983, where he is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the activities of
four departments with four professionals, five paraprofessionals and part-time personnel
in cataloging, acquisitions, retrospective conversion, government documents, serials, and
bindery
Janice Leichter is the Technical Services Librarian at Maslon, Edleman, Borman
& Brand in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is currently working on an AAS in Computer
Network Engineering. Leichter received her MLS in 1971 from Rutgers University. She has
created an Intranet web-page for the library, evaluated and recommended electronic
subscriptions and decreased usage of hard copy materials as well as upgrading the library
database.
Ann Sitkin is the Cataloging Services Librarian at Harvard Law School Library where
she has been employed since 1978. She received her MLS in 1970 from Columbia University.
Sitkin has served on various task forces and conducted many workshops in her career. She
currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Simmons Graduate School of Library and
Information Science.
Marie Whited, is the Manager of Cataloging Services at Yale Law School, Lillian
Goldman, a position she has held since 1995. Prior to coming to Yale she served as a Law
Catalog Liaison Specialist at the Law Library of Congress for two years. Whited received
her MS in Library Science from Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1967 and has
appeared as a speaker on many cataloging programs throughout her career.
