Functional Space Planning/Evaluation -- Maximize Your Library Space
For Law Firm and Corporate Law Libraries

Creating the right amount of well-designed space is an essential part of providing stellar information services.  If you are facing the design of a new space, or the expansion/remodeling of an existing facility, this workshop will prepare you to meet the challenge.  Up-front analysis of services, collections, and  technology are the focus of discussion.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify the full spectrum of issues that they will face in preparation for and implementation of a library redesign, or just the daily need to justify space;
  • Prepare legitimate space needs assessment, by reviewing the many areas of concern prior to planning for the actual space;
  • Identify areas within the library that are ripe for interim adjustment;
  • Identify the various types of shelving, workstations, and specialized library furniture;
  • Recognize the importance of the level of infrastructure needed to support the required electronic dissemination of information;
  • Read a floor plan, review shop drawings, and millwork drawings;
  • Identify "Things to Look For" in construction phases of the library design; and
  • Prioritize requirements for actually relocating into the new space.

Who Should Attend This Program?

Any law firm or corporate law librarian who is involved in a day to day battle for their space, or who is working to make more efficient use of the space they have, or is actively managing or implementing a change in the design of their library.

Instructor:

Charles F. Finnerty is President of Designs for Information (DFI), a space planning and systems consultation firm in Monroe, New York.  As a specialist in consultation, design, and implementation,  Finnerty has worked with a myriad of special libraries and record centers.
