Hi,

The organization of access to information on an Intranet and training users
to find information in the way that best suits their needs (and realizing
that their needs may change - accessing information from the office, from
home, from the road, via handheld device, etc.) is a wonderful challenge for
the digital library. It is because of this glut of information and the
myriad ways of accessing the information that librarians have such a unique
opportunity to reign in this confusion and make the end user have a
"seamless" experience.

The important thing at this point is that information professionals keep up
with cutting edge technologies in order to make the best decisions for their
users. These issues are complicated and becoming more so - who else better
suited to attack the issues with gusto and direct the vendors/publishers to
provide logical solutions than the law librarian?

In the future I see these two issues - training and access/organization of
access - as two of the greatest challenges to the profession and also some
of the biggest opportunities to remain a vital and important part of the law
firm culture. As firms add new technologies that can be used in conjunction
with research technologies (such as the KM systems that Greg Lambert
mentioned or the new portal solutions that tie DMS, CMS, and legal research
altogether) librarians have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor,
re-establishing their relevancy to the firms' mission.
