I also agree that Saturday classes were critical to my finishing a
graduate degree. Being a library professional I was not allowed to take
classes that conflicted with my work schedule. There may have been more
flexibility had I been at professional or seniority rank. Also the
graduate school had campuses in different locations which meant I took
as many classes as I could locally, completing many of my basic credits
sooner then if I would have to commute after work at night, say around
11pm. The only difficulty was that many of the journals I needed were
at the main campus which meant that for advanced classes where I needed
to write I would commute to the main campus in order to xerox articles.
I like paper.

I'm also an Emporia State graduate (2001). I enjoyed the weekend
intensive format, but I also enjoyed classes that meet only on the
internet. I found that the freedom to respond to emails and post
assignments at my convenience (often late at night or very early in the
morning) went a long way to keeping my wife and kids happy (more
weekends at home). My favorite aspect of library school was the focus
on "practical theory". Despite the fact that I worked in a law library
before I went to library school, I had no idea that there was a theory
based framework that I needed to learn in order to better understand how
people search for information and express their needs.

Welcome to the discussion "What's Going On in Library Schools!"
The first discussion question is: What did you enjoy about your program?

I went to Emporia State University in Emporia. It is a small town about
a 2 hour drive from the Kansas City area. The great thing about the
program was weekend classes. If a class was one hour, it required a one
weekend extensive study, usually in Emporia or Kansas City. This weekend
included Friday evening, Saturday and half day on Sunday. I also enjoyed
the classes because the program was included abstract or theory-oriented
sessions. The students' interests were a mixture of school, public,
academic and specialized libraries.
