[Prodev] What programs would you like to see in library schoo l

One of the classes we're thinking about offering is a course on preservation
vs. digitization, from both a collection development and a technical
perspective. We'd like our graduates to be able to make good preservation
decisions but also to know how to digitize legal information and make it
accessible on the Internet (or in a firm's intranet). Some of the law firms
that I've worked with are digitizing their old files rather than using
long-term storage.

I agree that classes on fundraising and budgeting are needed. How about one
in grant writing too, or as part of a mgmt class?

Being an advocate for preservation, I think this area is vital and should
be included as a separate class or in the curriculum of a general class on
tech services. Too many librarians graduate with no knowledge of basic
preservation issues and how much money can be saved by properly shelving,
dusting, doing standard book repairs, etc. rather than by relying on
replacing worn books (whoops - not in print any more) or rebinding. True,
much is being digitized, but that's not a strict preservation option and it
costs beaucoup bucks. All our libraries contain books and they will
continue to do so as long as all of us are active in our careers.
