Maybe the solution is to require library school faculty to take a sabbatical
to do "real work" for a summer or semester - actually work at a reference
desk or catalog materials. I'm sure some of us would be glad to accomodate
those needs in our libraries.

Subject: [Prodev] Real life situations in library classes
I enjoyed my school experience at Emporia very much but was disappointed in
what the professors understood as "real life." I was working for a
corporation as their environmental law librarian while finishing my degree.
It seemed that many times I was amazed that some of the teachers had not
been in a "practicing" situation in years. Should professors have some "real
life experiences?" Should they have had some experience working in
libraries?
What could be a remedy for giving the classroom "real life situations?"
Should library schools include practicing librarians on school advisory
boards? Should library associations help library schools understand some of
the practical needs of today's librarians?
