I want to thank the SIS and the Awards Committee for this recognition. It
truly is a wonderful honor, and I appreciate it very much. This award is recognition
not only for me but also for the library staffs at the Universities of North
Carolina, Alabama, and Richmond with whom I have worked. I've been very fortunate
in my career to work with law school deans and library directors at these
institutions who recognize the value of academic law librarians and who also
value participation in professional associations.
There are a few people whom I would like to thank personally. I worked with
two wonderful mentors at the University of North Carolina. Many of you will
remember Mary Oliver, who was the first director with whom I worked at UNC.
Lolly Gasaway became the director after Miss Oliver's retirement. Is Lolly
here? I had the great fortune to work with Lolly, who was and continues to
be a great mentor, for almost ten years.
I also want to thank the librarians and library staffs at all the schools where I have
worked. The library staffs and librarians at the University of North Carolina, at the
University of Alabama, and the University of Richmond have all provided me with wonderful
support and encouragement.

Finally, many of you know that I am married to Hazel Johnson, a law librarian who works
in a law firm. Thanks to you also, Hazel. It truly is wonderful to share my personal and
professional life with you.
Thank you all again very much. This is an honor that I will treasure always.
