RECORDS MANAGEMENT GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2001/2002
by Lee R. Nemchek, Chair
Between August 2001 and July 2002, the
activities of the Records Management Group centered on publishing and
On the program front, the Group did not have its program proposal
accepted for the 2002 conference in Orlando. However, two members of the Group Bob Oaks (Latham &
Watkins) and me were asked to speak at an SLA Legal Division program
entitled The Balancing Act of Multitasking Managers.
That program was given in Los Angeles last month at the SLA
annual conference, and the program materials have been posted on
Although PLL did not have any programs accepted for the 2002
conference of the Association of Legal Administrators, a link is being
sustained through networking and publications.
I continue to participate in ALAs online discussion forums,
providing expertise in law librarianship and records management,
whenever questions are posted that relate to these areas.
Also, ALA solicited two articles from me for publication in their
continuing CD ROM series entitled ALA Management Encyclopedia.
Volume II of this resource was published in February 2002 and is
available for sale from the ALA. The
two articles written by my partners and me are adapted chapters from the
forthcoming ARMA textbook on legal records management, and are entitled
ALAs Guide to Active Records Creation and Organization and
ALAs Guide to Active Records Management.
In other publication news, I recently released a compilation of
locally based records and conflicts of interest networking groups in
major metropolitan areas. This
list appeared in the Summer 2002 issue of PLL Perspectives. In
addition, I was very pleased that an article on records management won
the LLJ Article of the Year award this year.
Ive been especially gratified by the widespread response to
this article, having received many calls and e-mails from people
including attorneys and legal administrators all over the country,
asking for reprint rights, permission to use parts of the article in
program materials, and requests for further information.
Finally, the Records Management Group will hold
its annual business meeting on Monday, July 22, 2002 at 7am in the
Peabody Hotel, Cypress Room. Anybody
with an interest in or responsibility for records and/or conflicts
management is encouraged to attend.
Well be networking in an open-forum format, brainstorming on
program proposals for AALL and SLA in 2003, and discussing ideas for
converting the multitasking directory to electronic format.
