About Descriptive Cataloging Policy Advisory Working Group

This Working Group has functioned as an advisory group to the Representative from AALL to CCDA, ALA's Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access. John Hostage, our representative, has been heavily involved in reviewing and commenting on the draft of the new cataloging rules. We will review the work of the group this past year and learn what lies ahead as RDA nears completion. Learn more about this working group below.

Mission

  1. Advise and make informal and official recommendations to the TS-SIS Executive Board regarding AALL positions on national descriptive cataloging policies and standards, including development and revision of cataloging and metadata codes.
  2. Advise and make informal recommendations to the AALL Representative to CC:DA on national descriptive cataloging policies and standards, including development and revision of cataloging and metadata codes.
  3. Advise and make informal recommendations to the Law Library of Congress catalog liaison and to the Library of Congress/Cataloging Policy and Support Office representative to AALL regarding descriptive cataloging policies and practices.

Activities

  1. Assist the CC:DA rep in reviewing and commenting on proposals made to CC:DA members re cataloging codes, revisions, rule interpretations, etc.
  2. Maintain active communication among Advisory Group members, keeping up-to-date with proposed cataloging and metadata code changes, revisions, etc.
  3. Survey TS-SIS membership as needed for members' opinions on proposed descriptive cataloging changes, etc. Report findings to CC:DA representative and to the Chair of the Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee.

Reporting responsibilities

  1. Submit an annual written report of the Group's activities to the Chair of the Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee.
  2. Submit copies of the annual report to the TSLL newsletter editor, and to the TS-SIS web manager to post.
  3. Give oral report to general TS-SIS membership during a Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee Meeting and/or roundtable during annual meeting.
  4. Schedule at least one advisory working group meeting during AALL annual meeting.
  5. Keep Chair of the Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee up-to-date with the Working Group's activities.

Structure

  1. Persons may volunteer to serve during annual TS-SIS volunteer survey or during a call for volunteers made by the Chair of the Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee.
  2. Members and Chair are selected and appointed by Chair of the Cataloging and Classification Standing Committee in consultation with TS-SIS Chair and the CC:DA representative.
