ROUNDTABLES at the 2001 AALL Annual Meeting

Attend the Pre-game Warmup!

For players who attend our 7:00 AM Electronic Issues Interest Group meeting on Monday, July 16, 2001, there will be a big pot of coffee and a dozen bagels (with flavored cream cheeses). Thank you, IG Chair Marilyn Raisch, for volunteering to use this early meeting slot.

Heads Up
In future, AALL will add meeting and program locations to http://www.aallnet.org/events/ links: “Meetings & Events Schedule” and “Programs & Workshops Schedule.” A calendar of our team’s Annual Meeting activities will be available at the FCIL SIS table in the Exhibit Hall of the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Show Your Team Spirit
Manager Davis is starting to compile the roster of kind players willing to staff CONELL events or our Section’s flag-draped, candy laden activities table at the 2001 AALL Annual Meeting. If you will have one or two free hours at the conference, please contact : jdavis@brooklaw.edu  Thank you in advance for your support!

Special Events:

The Red Sox have Japan’s Nomo and we have Ireland’s John Furlong!  I hope to see every member of our team at BIALL Chair Furlong’s exciting presentation on the Irish legal system, informally known as “Bailey’s, Beer AND THE BIALL CHAIR” (see announcement in this issue). Mr. Furlong will speak on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 (5:15 PM) in the Hilton Minneapolis. Note: AALL’s meeting index refers to this event as “FCIL SIS Executive Committee Sponsors Presentation on Irish Legal Research.”

Also, there will be noted speakers at Interest Group meetings. Both the CIS and East European Law Interest Group (Saturday, July 14 (4 PM)) and the African Law Interest Group (Tuesday, July 17 (12:30 PM) are featuring marquis players.  All are invited to attend!

Stellar Educational Programs in the Convention Center:

Leadoff batter Stefanie “The Splendid Splinter” Weigmann, superstars Fred. L. Morrison and Christa McClure and librarians from Shearman & Sterling’s German offices will present “The New Reality of a United Germany: German Legal Sources and Research Strategies” (B-4, Sunday, July 15 in TWO PARTS, at 1:15 PM and 2:45 PM).

Victoria “Tom Terrific” Szymczak and John “The Rocket” Nann will be throwin’ heat at the fast-paced, fun program “Mastering The Matrix: Teaching with Technology” (D-2, Sunday, July 15 (4:15 PM)).  They will take questions and demonstrate more teaching techniques at the Teaching FILR Interest Group meeting following this program (5:30 PM in the Hilton Minneapolis).  At this IG meeting, there will be a surprise provided by Thomas “Mookie” Daniel and LEXIS-NEXIS. The FCIL SIS Executive Committee thanks LEXIS-NEXIS for supporting its TRIALL veterans!

“M & M Boys”1 Michael McCarthy and Jack McNeill will join Bronx Bomber Victor   Essien and Bo Sox slugger Irene Good for “Global Citizens: The Immigration Law Research Challenge” (E-1, Monday, July 16 (10:15 AM)). Recommended sources plus teaching tips!

Anne “Skipper” Burnett sets up heavy hitters Sam Trosow and Marc Rotenberg at “New Realities in Data Protection: The Transatlantic Debate” (F-7, Monday, July 16 at 4:15 PM).  Hear cutting edge commentary on the “safe harbor” privacy arrangement that the Department of Commerce negotiated with the European Commission.

Linda “Babe” Holmes, Jeanne “Iron Woman” Rehberg and James “Killer Killabrew” Southwick will electrify the crowd at “Global Trade: Key WTO Issues and WTO/GATT Research” (G-2, Tuesday, July 17 at 9:00 AM). Worth waking up for!

Cricket, anyone? Top batsmen Peter Clinch and Steven Whittle will join Marci Hoffman and Rubens Medina for the on-field triumph: “New Realities for Developing Global Collections: New Approaches and Cooperative Projects” (H-3, Tuesday, July 17 at 10:45 AM). Their discussion will include the Foreign Law Guide project (a web guide to foreign law collections in United Kingdom libraries) and the Global Legal Information Network at the Law Library of Congress.

In a league of their own...the Blue Helmet Researchers: Jean Davis, Dana Neacsu, Maureen Ratynski, Jeanne Rehberg, Mary Rumsey, Victoria Szymczak, and Julia Wallace. Yes, we have “UN blue” team caps!  Closers Ratynski and Wallace will evaluate key sources for UN-law related research at “Prometheus UNBound: ‘Firing Up’ United Nations Legal Researchers” (J-7, Wednesday, July 18 at 8:45 AM).  After the panel presentation, the Blue Helmet Researchers will guide participants through research problems at a roundtable (10:30 AM).

As Manager Torre molded the Yankees into World Series champs, our coordinators created a winning lineup of 2001 programs.  Thank you Coordinators Anne Burnett, Linda Holmes, Jack McNeill, Mary Rumsey, Victoria Szymczak, Stefanie Weigmann, and Jules Winterton.

Let the season begin!

1. For those who may be unfamiliar with Major League baseball legends, l fondly compare Section members McCarthy and McNeill to extraordinary Yankees Mantle and Maris (the “M & M Boys”).
