Announcement from the Chair

Superintendent of Documents, Judy Russell, announced at the AALL Annual meeting a change of policy, in that there should not be just one core list of essential titles for all depository libraries, but that different categories of depository libraries have different needs and so the "essential titles" list could be tweaked for different types of libraries. AALL had a role in this decision because Ms. Russell announced during the Leg and Reg Update that GPO would resume distribution of Supreme Court slip opinions to law and regional depository libraries in response to the resolution adopted last Spring by the SAALL Executive Board.

Ms. Russell sent out a message on August 29th explaining this policy change and asked depository librarians what titles should be on an "essential list" for the various categories listed in her message. GPO needs to hear from as many law librarians as possible. Ms. Russell is expecting us to respond!

Please suggest titles you would recommend for the "essential title" list. Barbie Selby, a current member of the Public Printer's Depository Library Council, will submit the recommendations to GPO.

The GD-SIS will be working together to propose a list. All members of the SIS should take this opportunity to participate in this important work. We are well on the way to becoming an almost exclusively electronic FDLP and so our community needs to be responsive about what titles must remain available to depositories in a print format.
