Preservation and Storage

Diskettes:

  • Never write directly on diskettes
  • Use labels for call numbers and ownership stamps
  • House diskettes so that they can't be bent, scratched, or crushed
  • Do not expose to dust and temperature fluctuations
  • Make backup copies of diskettes and store the copies separately
  • Avoid contact with magnetic desensitizers, which erase information on diskettes
Compact Disks:

  OR

  • Place labels for call numbers and ownership stamps on the accompanying jewel boxes, but be sure not to separate CDs from their boxes
  • Use compact disk circle labels specifically designed for affixing information directly to CDs
  • Scratches and other surface blemishes can ruin CDs Handle them with care
  • Save documentation containing product descriptions, setup instructions, and instructions for use. Ensure that patrons have access to the documentation
