  • GPO assigns each executive department and agency, the judiciary, the Congress, and other major independent establishments a place in the scheme.

  • The alphabetical designation assigned to agency or branch of government is usually based on the first letter or letters of the agency name. Here, GPO uses L for the Labor Department.

  • The "2" in the example represents the subagency of the Department of Labor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Subordinate Agencies

  • To distinguish among subordinate offices under the parent agencies, numbers follow the symbols.

  • GPO uses the figure "1" for the parent organization and the secretary's or administrator's office.

  • Beginning with figure "2," the numbers designate the subordinate bureaus and offices.
