Module 3: The Superintendent Of Documents
(Sudocs) Classification System

Parts of the Class Stem

Example

  • Agricultural Department (Including Secretary's Office) = A 1.
  • Forest Service = A 13.

    (note the period)

  • Period sets off the subordinate office from the series designation.

Practice Question:

The class stem is made up of:
The author symbol and series designation
Numbers and letters
The agency name
Combination of LC Class Number and Agency

For further thought:

If you can deduce what agency published an item, you can make an educated guess about its class stem using the List of Classes Available for Selection by Depository Libraries. Can you see how this would help you locate a publication that does not appear in your online catalog?
