Parts of the Class Stem

Series designation (AFTER THE PERIOD)
 
  • New series that are closely related to existing series are tied to the existing series by using slashes (or "shilling marks") so that they file side by side on the shelf.


  • The slash comes after the number assigned to the existing series, followed by a digit for each related series starting with "2". (The "1" is not used.) For example:
     HE 22.16:
    Health Care Financing Research and Demonstration Series
     

    HE 22.16/2:


    Research and Demonstrations in Health Care Financing

  • GPO designates preprints and separates by a slash and lower case letters. For example:

      I 28.37/a:   Preprints from Minerals Yearbook
