There are a couple of fee-based internet sites that have better retrospective coverage than most state pages. One is called VersusLaw and a patron can do a full-text search of cases from all fifty states, and pay a fee on either a daily, monthly or yearly basis. (See the Versuslaw page to see a listing of fees.) The other is the LOIS site (these are the same people who publish the CD-ROMS you will read about in the next section). They have cases (along with statutes and regulations) for over 20 states with more states being added all the time.

For nationwide searches, you can check the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory or West's Legal Directory.
Government Phone Directories. Although it is nice to have a phone directory just for the government offices, your patron could also check the blue pages of their local phone book. One handy reference book to have in this area that covers multiple states is the State Yellow Bookpublished by Leadership Directories, 212-627-4140.
