PLL-SIS News

PLL VIP at AALL 2009

PLL is pleased to announce that Mr. Edward Ross accepted PLL's invitation to attend AALL's annual meeting as PLL's guest. Mr. Ross is president of the DC chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators and he is nearly as excited to join us as we are to have him.

We hope many of you will be able to meet Mr. Ross during our stay in DC. We have invited Mr. Ross to PLL's breakfast, lunch and a variety of programs and events.

PLL Programs at AALL 2009

Check out these events and programs that may be of interest to PLL members at AALL this year! Note this is an updated list. The earlier list inadvertently left off programs C6, E5, and K5. My apologies to those who are presenting and those interested in these programs. They are highlighted below.

Also, for economic reasons, program D2 (originally: D-2: Nuts & Bolts of Competitive Intelligence: Librarians & Marketing Side by Side) has been changed. The new program is also presented by PLL members and is highlighted in the table below.

AALL announced this change in the latest AALL Update:

New program added:
D-2 Charting a New Course Mid-Career
Monday, July 27 – 8:45 a.m.

Panelists: Susan Catterall, Linda G. Will, Mark E. Estes, Joan L. Axelroth, Dina Dreifuerst, Christine Sellers

Law firm mergers have resulted in the displacement of one firm's library staff, and short-sighted cost containment measures have resulted in the elimination of library directors and library staffs being pushed under the auspices of other departments. Now, due to the downturn in the economy, private law firm librarians are very vulnerable.

Some firms are conducting reductions in force and some are terminating individuals for cause. It is time to assess the landscape and decide whether librarians want to remain librarians. If so, how can they make their positions more secure, keep their skills current, and prove their worth? If not, what is their next career move? For what profession have their skills and experiences prepared them?

Please check the online schedule (http://www.aallnet.org/events/) or your final program for up-to-date locations.

Announcing AALL Private Law Libraries Special Interest Section's Luncheon Speaker:
Ross Guberman on "How to Help Lawyers Who Don't Even Know They Need You"

During this lunchtime presentation, Professor Ross Guberman, one of the nation's leading legal-writing-and-research trainers, will share examples and thoughts on why so many young attorneys struggle with writing, even at the nation's most prestigious firms and agencies. He will also offer ideas on how law librarians can play a key role in helping these attorneys solve their most pressing writing problems.

Our speaker is a lawyer, a law professor and a journalist. Professor Guberman is the President of Legal Writing Pro LLC and a Professorial Lecturer in Law at George Washington Law School. He conducts writing and communication seminars at the many of the largest and most prestigious law firms in the country and for dozens of state and federal agencies and bar associations. He also teaches courses in legal drafting at GW.

For more information on LegalWritingPro and Ross's background see http://www.LegalWritingPro.com and http://www.linkedin.com/pub/ross-guberman/5/391/130.

To obtain a ticket to this event, select the PLL-SIS luncheon when you register for the 102nd American Association of Law Libraries AALL Annual Meeting and Conference. The luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, 2009 at the Renaissance-Grand Ballroom North/Central. This event is sponsored by LexisNexis.
