Candidate for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect:
Miriam D. Childs
Head of Technical Services
Law Library of Louisiana
Childs Statement:
All law libraries are facing changes and challenges at this time. The effects of these challenges on technical services departments are often overlooked or misunderstood. If elected as Vice Chair/Chair-Elect, I hope to serve the profession by providing support and guidance to technical services librarians who struggle to face challenges every day.
Childs Biographical Information:
Miriam Childs began at the Law Library of Louisiana in 2003, her first position as a law librarian. She is currently the Head of Technical Services after previously handling serials and acquisitions duties, and she has been the library’s documents librarian since 2008. Her previous positions include serials librarian at the University of New Orleans and collection management librarian at Jefferson Parish Public Library. Miriam is the Vice President/President-Elect of the New Orleans Association of Law Librarians, after holding the offices of treasurer and secretary. For the 2007 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Miriam was a member of the Local Arrangements Committee, acting as the volunteer coordinator. She has also served on the TS-SIS Education Committee and the SEAALL and SCCLL Program Committees. In addition, Miriam is a past recipient of the SEAALL Lucille Elliot Award, an SCCLL grant, and an AALL Annual Meeting Grant.
Candidate for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect:
Pam Deemer
Assistant Law Librarian, Cataloging and Acquisition Services
Emory University Law Library
Deemer Statement:
No activity in technical services is unaffected by our rapidly growing technology, whether acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, serials control, management, and so on. One key to coping with advances in hardware, software, standards, and rules is to listen to and to communicate with colleagues. Another key is not only reacting to change but being among the change makers. TS SIS has been excellent for fostering those keys. (I am in awe of so many of you.) We shall be facing very “interesting” times ahead, not only in cataloging. I know I am not a thinker, writer, or speaker at the high level of so very many of our TS SIS members. The volunteer activities of which I am proudest to have been a part, have been those that encourage and recognize the talents of my colleagues, and those that enable my colleagues to face the ever changing challenges of technical services. I would do my best to ensure that the great tradition TS SIS has for education, support, and innovation continues.

Candidate for Member-At-Large:
Barb Henigman
Associate Professor of Library Administration and Head of Technical Services
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Henigman Statement:
I am excited to become more involved in TS-SIS. This is an exciting time for libraries and especially challenging times for those of us in technical services. It is a time when we, as librarians, will need to come together and be able to blend the needs of our individual libraries with the larger issues in the profession. I have discovered that TS-SIS is provides wonderful opportunities to do this. As I have been learning the ins and outs of law librarianship over the past 5 years, I have had invaluable experiences TS-SIS colleagues and with TS-SIS as an organization. TS-SIS is involved in so much activity from education librarians on current developments to mentoring new librarians into the profession. As a member of the TS--SIS Executive Board, I am hopeful that I can bring some of my experience to these activities and continue to learn from my colleagues as well.
Henigman Biographical Information:
Currently I am Head of Technical Services for the Jenner Law Library at the University of Illinois. I have been in this position since 2004. Prior to 2004 I served in several positions for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus's main library system, including Technical Services Division Coordinator, Head of Cataloging, and Head of Original Cataloging. I received my MSLIS from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
As Head of Technical Services, I am responsible for supervising all Technical Services Activities and staff, monitoring budget expenditure, and overseeing acquisitions and cataloging activities. I am an active member of our library's Collection Development Committee and work closely with this group in setting collection policy. I work extensively with the University of Illinois GSLIS Graduate Assistantship program, supervising assistantships and practicum for library students that are interested in pursuing careers in Law Librarianship and Technical Services. I also serve as liaison to the Main Library as a member of the Cataloging Policy Working Group and as a member of several Library System IT groups. I have also been an active member of the University of Illinois Library faculty through peer evaluation and teaching.
Since joining AALL in 2004, I have been active in the Acquisitions Committee and Roundtable, and have served as coordinator for several programs. Most recently I was coordinator for the Acquisitions Workshop held prior to the 2007 annual conference. Currently I am a member of the OBS/TS Joint Research Grant Committee. Prior to joining AALL, I was an active member in ALA since starting my career in 1985. I have held leadership roles on committees in both LITA and ALCTS. I have also been an active member of the Illinois OCLC Users Group, holding elected offices for that organization as well.
Candidate for Member-At-Large::
Katrina Piechnik
Head of Technical Services
Jenkins Law Library
Piechnik Statement:
As I look back on my twenty-four years as a law librarian, I am very privileged to be asked to serve on the TS-SIS Executive Board.
TS-SIS supports its members with a wide range of services from which I have benefited over the years. The most valuable resource of TS-SIS is its members who are there to support and assist each other with new ideas, and shared their experiences.
As stated in the Bylaws, the purpose of the Technical Services Special Interest Section is to promote the communication of ideas, interests, and research which concern acquisitions, cataloging and classification, preservation of library materials, serials control, and other traditional (and not so) areas of Technical Services; to support the development and coordination of the country's law library resources, in all type and sizes of libraries. I am a strong believer in this mission and will be honored to work and to promote this Section.
After taking advantage of so much TS-SIS has offered for so many years, I am happy and willing to contribute to the work of the TS-SIS Executive Board.
