Representatives' Reports

ALA ALCTS CCS Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) and Task Force on Inherently Legal Subject Headings - Yael Mandelstam

The SAC Subcommittee on the Future of Subject Headings has expanded to include controlled vocabulary SWOT analysis (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). The subcommittee set up a listserv at http://lists.ala.org/wws/arc/headings/ which was open to anyone who wanted to join the discussion or just read the archived postings. The subcommittee will submit its final report at ALA Midwinter 2009 and is planning a panel discussion at ALA Annual 2009.

LC Update: The Subject Cataloging Manual will be divided into two manuals: a Classification/Shelflisting Manual, and a Subject Heading Manual.

SAC: The Task Force on Inherently Legal is continuing proposals to LC.

Fast Cleanup Project: 27 volunteers worked on this project. There were 1405 "unique streams" (which represented 32,000 records on WorldCat); 946 were marked for deletion (67%); 6% had "Law and legislation" under a person! Only 27% of these headings were correct. During this project, problems with pattern headings were discovered (i.e. "chemical" headings).

Genre Terms for Law Materials Program: The Subcommittee on Genre Form has sent a letter to LC in support of genre form headings. The law terms are being prepared by the members of CSCP (working group) in coordination with the Library of Congress. To facilitate communication among project members the Law Genre wiki was created. See the FAQ and Project guidelines for more information. Among completed activities are: expanded original list; thorough editorial review; cleaned up scope notes and topical terms.

Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information (MARBI) - George Prager

His full report is on AALLNET on the TS-SIS site.

There were three themes: internationalization; series; and RDA proposals.

Series:
CONSER: 440 is obsolete; 490 field can be used with indicator "1" or "0". 8xx subfields (new): #x-ISSN is defined; #3-series for multivolumes

These changes have not been finalized. They have to be published and sent out by LC. Implementation will take place next year at the earliest.

2008-1 MARC Proposal re: DDC. DDC changed in MARC21
2008-2 Copyright field

RDA:
There is a RDA-MARC Working Group and 2008-05 has lots of proposals and discussion papers.

New codes being developed for videorecordings.

Cataloging/Classification Section: Description and Access (CC:DA) & Descriptive Cataloging Policy Advisory Working Group - Kathy Winzer

Kudos to Kathy for her 6 years as our representative to this committee. John Hostage will be her successor. Her full report is on the web at: http://www.aallnet.org/sis/tssis/representatives/2008/ccda2008.htm

Kathy is also reporting for Ann Sitkin and the Descriptive Cataloging Policy Advisory Working Group. Anne would like to thank the WG for their work this year.

Kathy attended the Joint Steering Committee meeting in October. All documents related to RDA are posted on the JSC website at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/jsc/ and then click on RDA.

ALA Publishing prefers an online version of RDA, as publishing fees could be expensive. There are concerns for smaller libraries who might not have access to an online version.

The full draft of RDA is due in October, with 3 months for comments - but no comments on the rules themselves. You should send your rule comments to John Hostage.

CC:DA has sent their responses to the WG on: treaties; Chapters 6-7; "Laws, etc.;" Court reports; annotations and commentaries.

LC Update - Jolande Goldberg

  1. Following up on requests of the Law Library, I finalized all, schedule KBS (Canon Law of the Eastern Churches) - including Oriental Orthodox and Orthodox Eastern Church, and several subject tables -currently converted to the MARC format.

Simultaneously, I thoroughly revised several schedules: BR/BX (Christianity - early and Medieval periods; and Christian denominations) and KBR/KBU (Canon Law), so I can make all the necessary cross references between the various classes. At the same time, subject headings and name authorities had to be updated, and primary source materials for reclassification (B-K) had to be identified in the collections and prepared.

As soon as the draft is converted (available for comment in the life data base (ClassWeb), an introduction to the religious schedules will be up on the CPSO website.
  2. Revisions and expansions in the KZ/JZ schedules were executed, especially developments for the International Criminal Court (ICC) and UN. Watch out for the Weekly List.
  3. Earlier this year, I revised the European schedule KKZ (Yugoslavia) with changes and revisions throughout the Balkans (KKK, KKL, KKH, KKS, and KJM). Changes are in ClassWeb.
  4. Major portions of my time are taken up by design of the subject tables for the Indigenous law schedule (KIA-KIX) and new development for Indians of Central and South America. Incorporation of URL's for major websites, law gateways, and maps/diagrams for quick access to sections of the schedules are further studied; demonstration for "Prove of concept" is prepared for management decisions.

We have lost another CPSO Subject Specialist, Millie Wewerka (retirement). Interviews for two open positions in the Office are underway.

Submitted by Karen A. Nuckolls, with Thanks to Jolande Goldberg, Yael Mandelstam, Jean Pajerek, and Kathy Winzer.
