Committee on Exchange of Duplicates
2007-2008 Annual Report

Portland, Oregon — July 2008

The fall serials exchange of duplicates took place in December 2007. Forty-three libraries registered for the 2007/08 exchange. Of the forty-three participants, thirty-two participated in the fall exchange which is an increase of two libraries from the 2006 fall exchange. The total number of issues offered was 13,681.

Each time the exchange takes place, new titles are added to the authority list. The fall exchange had 2,216 titles which is an increase of 143 titles from the spring 2007 exchange. New titles were submitted by participants or were obtained from the serials section of Technical Services Law Librarian. Each title was researched to verify the correct title before it was added to the authority list.

A significant improvement in the exchange was to allow more time for participants to search the completed list before the start of the exchange. Since the master list is very large, it takes a considerable amount of time to search the list. The time period for searching was extended to a two-week period.

Other changes were made to improve the format of the master title list. For example, each issue was listed on a separate line rather than collapsing issues on various lines. The result was to make the list easier to search. It also helped with sorting as the list was compiled.

Providing download links of the master and secondary lists has proved beneficial to participants. In the fall exchange, the links were offered again in PDF and Excel formats.

The three most frequent issues offered in the November 2007 exchange were ABA Journal, Journal of Legal Education, and Law Library Journal.

Thanks to all who helped and participated in the exchange.

Respectfully submitted,
