Committee on Exchange of Duplicates
2008-2009 Annual Report
Washington, D.C. — July 2009
The fall 2008 Exchange was not held. During that time Michele Pope, Loyola University Law Library New Orleans, took over Bonnie Geldmacher's duties. The database and website management remain with Wayne Schneider who is now paid for his services from the money generated by the Exchange subscription cost. Mr. Schneider gets $10 out of the $30 per library subscription cost. Additional changes in programming are billed per his programming rate of $50/hour. Thirty-six participants registered for the spring 2009 Exchange.
540 past participant contact information was passed down to me and consolidated into one spreadsheet. Emails were sent to the 211 past members with email addresses, inviting them to join the spring 2009 Exchange. They were also asked to confirm or change their contact information. Out of 211 contacted, 36 recipients joined.
Wayne and I decided not to change the domain name because of the cost. The registration form was condensed into one page and a credit card payment option was added. My contact information was added and prior dates were changed. There are 2227 titles in the authority list now. There were 2073 titles in the authority list after the spring 2007 Exchange.
This year the Exchange was adapted for a rotating Chair. While the web platform is stable, Chair persons can be replaced. For this purpose a guideline has been assembled with instructions, templates for correspondence, time-lines, and Exchange staff contact information, to be passed on to new Chairs in the years to come.
Over 19,357 issues were offered in the spring 2009 Exchange. There were 1418 distinct titles offered. The three most offered titles were the ABA Journal with 593 items, the Journal of Legal Education with 485 items, and the Virginia Law Review with 429 items. Although there were 1540 issues on the secondary list, a technical problem prevents an accurate count of issues listed since duplicate offers were also on the master list.
After the spring 2009 Exchange, feedback included a majority vote to have an exchange in fall 2009, and a 2 day response time to requests. In regards to searching two lists, one more voted in favor of one list, but two lists will continue, to be reevaluated after the fall exchange, and after the authority list is updated and the secondary list is more thoroughly screened. For the next Exchange, past participants not contacted this spring will be contacted using the AALS directory as a resource for current email addresses.
Thank you for this opportunity.
