RARE BOOK CATALOGING ROUNDTABLE

James Larrabee
University of California, Berkeley
larrabee@boalt.berkeley.edu

For all interested in the cataloging of rare books, an informal roundtable meeting will be held at the upcoming convention at Baltimore. The time and place are still undetermined, but be prepared for a pre-dawn slot, so this may not be for the faint-hearted! Topics addressed should appeal not only to practitioners, full- or part-time, but to all who have to deal with rare books in any context of librarianship, so far as cataloging standards and practices enter in. The organizers of this meeting hope to establish a permanent forum for rare book cataloging, as a basis for sharing ideas, working toward agreed standards, providing educational programs and materials, setting up liaisons with other professional groups, and whatever else will help to enhance rare book cataloging in law libraries.

At last year's convention, a small meeting (attended by Harvey Hull (Yale), Katherine Hedin (Univ. of Minnesota), Heather Hawkins (Univ. of San Francisco), and myself) was held to address these and similar concerns. In addition to those present, others expressed interest, but were unable to attend or did not receive notice in time. Judging from the good attendance at the program on rare book cataloging at the convention last year, we feel there is a considerable interest out there, and we hope to build on this.

If you are a cataloger who has to deal with an occasional rare book, or a full-time rare book cataloger of a major collection, or anything in between, or a user of cataloging who would like to see a higher standard of rare book cataloging in law libraries, please come and let us know what you need, what you would like to do, what you want us to do. Librarians have put most of the major problems of automation behind them, and now is a good time to deal with a perhaps neglected area, and make those machines work for us and for rare book users. I welcome suggestions, comments, volunteers, whether or not you can or want to attend the meeting -- just write, call, or e-mail.
