TYPE: Special Committee
PURPOSE: The planning committee serves to develop an agenda for and plan a Futures Summit to be held in November 2011.
CHARGE: Associations nationally are beginning to deal with issues regarding communication, understanding, engagement and participation of newer, younger members. Associations like other sectors of the professional world have an increasingly aging membership. As such, it is important for them to “bridge the gap” between newer and more seasoned members. As AALL and the profession of law librarianship look toward their futures, we need to find ways to engage encourage and prepare new member law librarians for their future as the next leaders of the association and the profession. In order to do so, a Summit on the Future of AALL and Law Librarianship will be held in November 2011 in conjunction with the Fall Executive Board Meeting of AALL. To that end, the planning committee is charged with researching issues related to the topics of member engagement, communication (including social media), leadership development, mentoring. generational differences and ongoing changes in the profession of law librarianship in order to develop an agenda for the Futures Summit. In addition, the committee will assist the AALL President in the selection of the Summit participants.
The Summit will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, November 3 and the morning of Friday, November 4, 2011. The Summit, which will be by invitation, will include as participants the AALL Executive Board, selected AALL staff, members of the Planning Committee, and additional selected AALL members. Maureen Sullivan has been engaged as the facilitator for the Summit.
TENURE: Planning committee members will serve until the conclusion of the Summit in November 2011.
SIZE: The planning committee will consist of a Chair and five members, and a non-voting Executive Board and staff liaison.
