The Recruitment to Law Librarianship Committee undertook various initiatives this year to recruit new members into the profession and to better inform current AALL members of steps they may take to recruit promising acquaintances into the profession of law librarianship. Committee members were Chair Susan Lewis-Somers, Judith A. Gaskell, Ann Clifford Green, James Milles, Jennifer Meger, Diane Murley, Janet L. Oberla, Deidra A. Payne, Phebe Poydras, Michael Saint-Onge and Maureen D. Well.

Committee member Ann Clifford Green represented the Recruitment Committee and AALL at a webinar (web-based seminar) for paralegals and legal assistants on careers in law librarianship and other management fields. It was hosted by the International Paralegal Management Association on October 6, 2005. Ann spoke about her own law firm career experience, what it takes to succeed in law librarianship and how AALL has enhanced her career.

Member Diane Murley served as the committee's webmaster. She began a reorganization and redesign of the committee website at The committee reorganized the education and career resources for prospective law librarians at the site, and began a new section of outreach and recruitment resources for AALL chapters and other members working on local recruitment efforts. The website redesign will continue as an ongoing project for the 2006–2007 year.

The committee also added new resources to its website, including content provided by members Judith A. Gaskell, Ann Clifford Green, Diane Murley and Susan Lewis-Somers.

Recruitment Committee members Phebe Poydras, Maureen Well, Jennifer Meger and Susan Lewis-Somers published Recruitment Tips for Law Librarians. The Tips offer practical steps that librarians in law schools, law firms, and court, county and other government libraries can take to recruit promising acquaintances and colleagues to careers in law librarianship. The Tips were disseminated to several law library listservs and they are available at They will also be published as part of a larger article in Spectrum in late 2006.

The AALL Executive Board voted in Spring 2006 to merge the Graduate Education for Law Librarianship Special Committee into the Recruitment Committee. To implement this change, Chair Susan Lewis-Somers worked with incoming AALL President Sally Holterhoff and Board Liaison Joyce Manna Janto to revise the committee charge to absorb the Special Committee's mission. The charge was further revised to better reflect the Recruitment Committee's role as a clearinghouse for education and recruitment information and resources.

The chair responded to frequent inquiries from people interested in pursuing careers in law librarianship, sent from the committee's website contact form. She touted the rewarding profession of law librarianship and sent information about graduate education and internships, career opportunities in various law library settings and salary information. She also arranged contacts with law librarians in all sectors.

Chair Susan Lewis-Somers and incoming Chair Ann Clifford Green represented the Recruitment Committee at the CONELL Marketplace in St. Louis. The committee also hosted a table in the activities area of the Exhibit Hall.

Ann Clifford Green will chair the Recruitment Committee in the 2006–2007 year.
