West Group, a provider of e-information and solutions to the U.S. legal market, donated $150,000 to the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Endowment, which furthers the education of minority students pursuing a degree in law librarianship. Established by the American Association of Law Libraries and West Group, the minority scholarship is awarded annually to minority students that best embody the career goals of the law librarian profession.

"West Group has been a long-time supporter and sponsor of the AALL, and the heart of our partnership has been education and outreach," said Anne Ellis, director of librarian relations for West Group. "We also understand the importance of diversity in the legal profession and feel strongly about supporting programs that can promote greater diversity and opportunity for law librarians. This endowment underscores that commitment."

Through its sponsorship and involvement in AALL programs, West Group has long taken an active interest in education and professional development for law librarians. The company has partnered with AALL for such innovative programs as a worldwide satellite educational videoconference and the AALL Professional Education Series. West Group has also developed and underwritten education programs for regional AALL chapters and events.

"We are pleased that West Group has taken ownership of such an important initiative as this," said Susan E. Fox, AALL executive director. "Thanks to their breadth of resources and commitment to the profession, we are hopeful that the minority scholarship program will open professional opportunities for deserving students."

The George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Endowment is awarded to college graduates with law library experience who are members of a minority group and are degree candidates in accredited library or law schools. Preference is given to individuals with previous service to or interest in law librarianship. Applicants must show evidence of financial need.
