Excellence in Marketing Award

Description

The Excellence in Marketing Award honors outstanding achievement in public relations activities by an individual, group of individuals, library, chapter, special interest section, consortium, caucus, or any other group affiliated with the Association.

Public relations is a critical responsibility of nearly every member of the library profession. It is important to recognize and acknowledge outstanding contributions achieved by law librarians in raising the visibility of the profession and its Association. It is the intention of the AALL Excellence in Marketing Award Jury to issue the Excellence in Marketing Award to inspire, educate, and encourage promotional activities by the AALL membership.

Categories

Best Brochure

Entries in this category should be in the form of a paper or electronic brochure that addresses some or all of the following: features—a description of your product, service, or library; benefits—a description of its benefits to your patrons or audience; people—a description of the people behind the product or service; purpose—addresses the question of what you want your audience to do or learn after reading the brochure.

Best Newsletter

A printed or electronic newsletter, pamphlet, or small newspaper containing news or information of interest chiefly to a special group or audience.

Best Campaign

A campaign can be a single promotional activity organized, or a series of related promotions conducted, during the course of the year. Law Day, National Library Week, Special International Librarians’ Day, Legislative Day, etc., fall under this category, as well as any other distinct program organized by an institution, such as a firm-wide Quality Day or Annual Festival of Legal Learning.

This category also includes, but is not limited to, any of the following: exhibits organized by any AALL member, committee, special interest section, caucus, consortia, or chapter, etc., held at an annual meeting or conference such as a state bar meeting, legal administrator’s conference, chapter institutes, or AALL Annual Meeting.

Best PR ToolKit

This category requires a combination of at least three promotional items. They may consist of any of the following: maps, audio/video tapes, bibliographies, library/research guides, annual reports, brochures, procedural manuals, newsletters, pathfinders, handbooks, surveys, bookmarks, cartoons, banners, calendars, or magnets.

Best Use of Technology

Entries in this category have applied and used digital or electronic technology as a vehicle for promotion and marketing of a library, chapter, special interest section, or group of individuals affiliated with the Association or chapter. The quality of the product is important, but the emphasis is on how this product was promoted and advertised. Examples of entries in this category include, but are not limited to, any of the following: homepages, websites, software programs, CD-ROMS, library-designed kiosks, audio/video tapes, and databases.

Process

The AALL Excellence in Marketing Award Jury screens all the entries received and selects one or more recipients for each of the five categories: Best Brochure, Best Newsletter, Best Campaign, Best PR Tool Kit, and Best Use of Technology.

Eligibility

a) Must be a member in good standing in AALL or in an AALL chapter.
b) The award may be presented to an individual, group of individuals, library, chapter, special interest section, consortia, caucus, or any other group affiliated with the Association.

Entry Requirements

Download the Excellence in Marketing Award Entry Form

Nominations may be made by any member of, or group within, the Association or chapter affiliates. There are no restrictions on the number of entries an applicant may submit in any award category, but each entry must be mailed separately.

Entries must be dated and have been utilized or implemented during the previous calendar year. Unsuccessful entries, new editions, or substantial revisions of previous award-winning entries may be submitted for consideration each year. Each entry MUST include:

  1. Entry Form. Please be certain the material or activity fits the category and criteria established. It should be noted that there is some overlap between categories.Specific use and description of how the promotional item or activity was advertised and promoted is critical. This is central to the award. Answer the questions listed on the entry form in full detail. Use as many pages as necessary.Submit along with your entry form all supporting documentation, such as testimonials, photographs, surveys, statistics, other awards of recognition, newspaper clippings, etc. Digital copies are preferred.
  2. Entry Form Must Be Signed. Submissions will not be returned. Entries will remain the property of the Association. By submitting an entry, applicants grant permission to the American Association of Law Libraries full rights to publish, reproduce, and publicize entries in any paper or electronic publishing format. Entries may be scanned, described, displayed, linked, or reproduced on AALLNET, the Association’s website, or published in any other Association publications. No monetary compensation will be received by applicants from any Association use of their entries.
  3. Eight Copies of the Entry. Submit eight individual copies of the application and entry, e.g., brochure, newsletter, handbook, bookmark, PR toolkit, or map, or a single digital version. Online submissions are preferred. In the case of a campaign or home page, submit PDF or hard copies of all supporting documentation: a campaign notebook or a printout of at least the main page and introductory material of a home page.
  4. Entry Deadline. Must be submitted by February 1. Please email the entry form and supporting documentation to Kylie Weller. All entries will be forwarded directly to the Excellence in Marketing Award Jury for evaluation.

Judging Criteria

Judges will assign points using the following:
•    Quality of the material/activity
•    Creativity in its execution and promotion
•    Usefulness to target audience
•    Overall rating

The success of a project depends not on the magnitude of the activity or item, but rather on the marketing and utilization of the promotional materials.

The AALL Awards Committee and the AALL Excellence in Marketing Award Jury reserve the right to issue multiple awards, or issue no award in a category if a worthy candidate is not identified during the awards process. No more than five awards will be made in any year.

Award Presentation

Awards will be presented during the AALL Annual Meeting. Winners will be honored with a plaque issued by the American Association of Law Libraries recognizing their outstanding achievements.

The winning entries may be featured in AALL Spectrum, the Association’s magazine, and on AALLNET.
