AALL eBriefing / Statement on President’s Executive Order Addressing Free Speech on College Campuses

President Trump signed an Executive Order yesterday directing federal agencies to take appropriate steps to ensure colleges and universities that receive federal research funds uphold free speech

AALL agrees with the notion, as described in the Executive Order, that “Free inquiry is an essential feature of our Nation’s democracy, and it promotes learning, scientific discovery, and economic prosperity.” Free speech is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, and is an essential component of a fully functional democracy.

AALL strongly supports free speech and free expression. These principles are part of the very bedrock of law libraries. However, the Executive Order is short on details and does not define what constitutes free speech. We urge the White House to work with stakeholders before determining how to implement its provisions.
